Bio: Born in Puerto Rico and raised near Baltimore, Paula Liz attended the Maryland Institute of Art where she received her BFA in Painting and MAT in Art Education. She believes in the power of student voice and community artivism.  Paula Liz has over 10 years of social justice teaching experience at public, private, and charter schools in New York City, Austin, and DC. Paula Liz currently teaches Elementary art at a two-way immersion school just outside of DC (in Maryland) where she continues her anti-bias, anti-racist art teaching.

TEACHERS AS ARTISTS: CONNECTIONS

Maryhill Museum of Art, working in partnership with the Washington Art Education Association, showcases teacher talent by inviting educators to participate in Teachers as Artists, an annual juried exhibition in the museum’s MJ Murdock Charitable Trust Education Center.

In 2021 we invited regional arts educators to submit work around the theme Connections. The theme brings a focus to people, places, or things that have connected our lives during the past year, inviting arts educators to explore their vision of “connections” through multiple media. Presented in partnership with Washington Art Education Association and Tacoma Museum of Art. You can view Connections — Teachers as Artists online here, and also see the show in person at Maryhill Museum of Art from March 15 – April 25, 2021.

-Watercolor paper to create my final research page on
-list of favorite artists you want to study more about
-books on your favorite artists
- a collection of favorite art materials like colored pencils, watercolor, gouache, markers, collage materials, etc.

What are the best ways to approach color theory to best prepare students for a career in art and design? Come and gain useful knowledge and leave with a take-away list of resources to enhance your teaching!

The workshop will focus on teaching multiple color systems to middle school and high school-aged students. It will focus on proper use of vocabulary and strategies to impart the message that understanding color is important to all vocations, not just art and design fields. Jennifer will discuss my process of teaching (and un-teaching) as well as show examples of how to connect color theory to everyday application.

There are no materials necessary other than note-taking materials.

However, Jennifer does recommend the purchase of a RYB color wheel and a CMY color wheel for their own reference. Jennifer will provide a comprehensive list of resources and textbooks at the end of the workshop.
