However, the merger with Malaysia was fraught with difficulties from the onset. This was due to a series of fundamental clashes between the PAP government in Singapore and the Alliance leaders in Kuala Lumpur over issues ranging from extremist politicking to contentious economic and financial arrangements. One of these disagreements was over the 39.8 percent share of the new taxes that Singapore was required to contribute even though Singapore’s population was just 17 percent of the total population of Malaysia. These new taxes were announced bythe federal government on 25 November 1964 in a bid to raise $147 million to address the federal deficit of $543 million.

One of the major concerns was that the PAP continued to ignore these disparities in their repeated cry for a "Malaysian Malaysia" – the equal treatment of all races in Malaysia by the government which should serve Malaysian citizens without any regard for the economic conditions of any particular race. Another contributor was the fear that the economic dominance of Singapore's Port would inevitably shift political power away from Kuala Lumpur in time, should Singapore remain in the Federation.

The state and federal governments also had disagreements on the economic front. Despite an earlier agreement to establish a common market Singapore continued to face restrictions when trading with the rest of Malaysia. The situation escalated to such an intensity that talks soon broke down and abusive speeches and writing became rife on both sides. UMNO extremists called for the arrest of Lee Kuan Yew.

The reasons why Singapore had to separate from Malaysia were due to economic difference.

The evidence from the source is "the Malaysian government was more interested in pursing its own trade expansion than to keep its words. As a result, Singapore was unable to trade with Malaysia in a common market, and this affected its economy".

From this evidence, I can infer that Malaysia did not cooperate with Singapore with the pursuit of a common market, but instead focused on it's own economy. Hence, Singapore was at a disadvantage and thus left the merger.

Another reason as to why Singapore left Malaysia was because of the disagreements between the political parties.

The evidence from the source is, "One of these disagreements was over the 39.8 percent share of the new taxes that Singapore was required to contribute even though Singapore’s population was just 17 percent of the total population of Malaysia."

From this evidence, I can infer that Malaysia wanted Singapore to contribute 40% of the taxes to them, regardless of the small population size compared to Malaysia. However, Singapore refused to do so which caused disagreements between the two countries. Hence, due to the unreasonable taxes, Singapore left Malaysia.

Therefore, the reasons why Singapore left to Malaysia was because of both economic differences and the disagreements regarding the shared treasury.

I can infer from source A that Singapore had to separate from Malaysia due to economic reasons. From the source, it states that " .. it was because the Malaysian government was more interested in pursing its own trade expansion than to keep its words. As a result, Singapore was unable to trade with malasyia in a common market." From this i can infer that Malaysia was not interested in helping to grow Singapore's Economy, all they were focused in was to grow their own economy. The source states " Besides, there was also a great deal of confusion and disagreement on how Singapore should contribute to the Federal treasury and development loans to the Borneo states. " This shows that Malaysia is interested in Singapore to help Boreno states develop and not focus on themselves first, this means that Singapore is unable to fully focus on growing in economy and yet have to give money to grow the Borneo states, thus Singapore would want to leave as Malaysia is not interested in helping them grow as much as Singapore expected them to.

From source A, I can infer that Singapore had to separate from Malaya due to differences in their economies.
This is evident from the source which states, "Largely, it was because the Malaysian government was more interested in pursuing its own trade expansion than to keep its words. As a result, Singapore was unable to trade with Malaysia in a common market, and this affected its economy."
Therefore, from the source quoted above, I can infer that because in terms of economical issues, Malaysia was not faithful to the promise between Singapore and Malaysia, and was only contributing to its own economy, than the common market between Malaysia and Singapore, thus this did not benefit Singapore in any way, even affecting its own economy. Hence, Singapore decided to separate from Malaya.

From source A, I can also infer that the separation happened due to disagreements in economic policies.
This is evident from the source which states, "Besides, there was also a great deal of confusion and disagreement on how Singapore should contribute to the Federal treasury and development loans to the Borneo states. "
Therefore, from the source quoted above, I can infer that because the Malaysian government had unreasonable demands that Singapore was expected to contribute 40% to the Federal treasury despite being only 17% of the Malaysian population. This is unfair to Singapore as it only boosts Malaysia's economy, not Singapore. Thus, due to being unable to come eye to eye with the economical issues, Singapore left Malaysia. Therefore, for Singapore's own interests, Singapore left Malaysia to pursue its own economical growth.
