Roman cemeteries were located outside the boundaries of cities.

Sometimes a coin was placed on top of the dead body’s mouth. This originally came from the Greeks but was then passed on to Romans. It is believed that the coin would be for the ferryman who transported souls of people who have just died across a river that separated the Afterlife from the natural world.

Romans thought it was their duty to care for their dead ancestors (family members).

When a family member died, their closest relative would close the eyes of the dead, and all family members (living) would mourn (weep) over, calling out the dead person's name

After the dead body was washed and anointed, the body would be dressed in clothes that reflected their position in Roman society. For example, a Roman citizen would be dressed in a toga.

Funerals took place at the dead person's home and the cemetery. They performed a Eulogy, which was a speech honouring the deceased.

Families that could not afford a big ceremony would sacrifice an animal near the dead body.

The body's ashes were kept in urns, but were later replaced with a proper burial.

If people could not afford it, they would have the body of the dead family member placed in a stone coffin.

Wealthy Romans had their dead bodies stored in a chamber for family visits and those that could not afford such treatment would be buried in a small simple tomb. People that could not afford a small tomb, would use a catacomb, which was a large tunnel made of rock under the city used to store the dead people’s bodies.
