"Straddler was putting on his tie, in front of his mirror when I got there. He spent around half his goddamn life in front of the mirror. I sat down in my chair and sort of watched him for a while." This shows the reader that Holden is very observant when it comes to Straddlers actions and appearance. Holden is genuinely a lonely guy he does not have many friends and he lies a lot to make himself sound interesting and make it seem like he has a busy life. Therefore he might be jealous of Saddler because he's good looking, popular, and athletic and does not have to try to fit in.

Holden has rapid mood swings. His mood in the begging of chapter 15, consist of him being pretty down hes too lazy to get up hes smoking a cigarette he wanted to call up Jane but it reads "But I wasn't in the mood." Then right after that he calls up Sally Hayes, being all friendly and social. Another example is when Holden went out for breakfast he saw two nuns having a hard time carrying their suit cases so he gave them a hand. Then he begins to judge the quality of their suit cases. It reads "They were very inexpensive looking suit cases - the ones that are not genuine leather or anything. It isn't important, I know, But I have it when somebody has cheap suitcases."

Holden begins crying hysterically as he's about to leave to go to Mr. Antolini's house while he is hugging Phoebe. This shows how Holden's emotions can change radically because in the book this is the one of the first times Holden has expressed true emotion for something.

Holden seems to feel that everybody around him has no idea about his situation or what he's going through regarding life and completely disregards and immediately throws out any help even if its just entertainment such as seeing a play he doesn't want to be entertained or finds something he thinks is negative and calls the actors fake for acting. He seems to feel that rather than people aren't caring about him he thinks they're actively making his life worse. "In the first place, I hate actors. They never act like people. They just think they do. Some of the good ones do, in a very slight way, but not in a way that's fun to watch. And if any actor's really good, you can always tell he knows he's good, and that spoils it." (130)
