During this time, Lynch began to experiment with a variety of different materials and animations. His first short films while in art school were "Six Men Getting sick" (1967), "The Alphabet" (1968), and "The Grandmother" (1970). This was also a very difficult time in his life due to his financial struggles and balancing that with finding his artistic identity.

Sources:
1.

The making of Eraserhead: In 1971 Lynch moved to Los Angeles where he attended the AFI Conservatory. The school gave him a $10,000 grant which unfortunately was not enough to complete the film. Due to the financial problems, preproduction was halted and then started up again, for years at a time. The film wasn't completed until 1976. Upon it's release in 1977, it baffled critics and audiences then later became an iconic "midnight movie" garnering a cult status.

Sources:
Lynch, David, director. Eraserhead, Janus Films, 1977.
Barnes, Rick, et al., directors. David Lynch: The Art Life. David Lynch: The Art Life, 2017, https://www.criterion.com/films/29285-david-lynch-the-art-life.

The Failure of Dune: David Lynch had many difficulties during preproduction with Dune. First with the script which he wrote 5 drafts of. Then on set, filming accumulated to approximately 4 hours of footage that had to get cut down. By the end of the project, Lynch felt he was "selling out", and felt alienated from the project.
