The heart informs our conscience along with reason and experience. If we fill our hearts with love and kindness, we will act with love and kindness towards others. If we fill our hearts with hate, we will act with this emotion. The things we allow to fill our heart are extremely important when considering our conscience. If we fill our hearts with the wrong things, we will not be able to act with love and kindness, which leads us to God.

Our conscience is a place in ourselves, not something created by others that is imposed on us, where we can be at one with God. This part of us allows us to be in touch with God's will. Our conscience helps us understand which choices are moral. We have the ability to either act on these good choices or ignore them and do something bad.

MLK's quote counsels us to stand up for what is right, even if it isn't the obvious choice. In this case, the right thing is not reflected in the law, so MLK hopes to inspire us to fight these laws in hope to create laws based in kindness and love.

MLK is drawing on his own experience in order to counsel us because he spent his life fighting more advancements in Civil Rights. In order to do this, King had to fight the government because it was supporting racial inequality. Although it may not have seemed like the right choice because the government created these laws, King realized that they were immoral and fought to change them.

I think this quote gives us very important advice about standing up for our rights, especially when it might not seem like the obviously right choice. It challenges us to think critically about things that others have accepted as good and to make change if necessary.
