For communication:
Interpersonal communication always influences our daily life. There are several areas that could relate to us: intercultural communication, family communication, business communication, and social communication. For instance, I’m from China, so it is intercultural communication when I talk with my lecturer and classmates. When I talk with my parents, this is family communication. When I find a job, it is in business communication. When I play mobile games with my friends, it is social communication. Therefore, I can relate a lot of things in my life to interpersonal communication.

I think that "communication without violence" could improve my interpersonal communication in my daily life. I find that I can communicate with other people without violence. But when I was 18 or 19, I could not do that. I always used emotion to show what I wanted to say. Obviously, the communication situation is not good. Emotions would receive emotions. My request was still ungratified, and the question was also unsolved. In other words, I gave the bad feedforward messages, then I got the bad feedback messages.

I failed in some work relationships. I made some mistakes, but I learned how to communicate with other people. In another way, life is like a course in interpersonal communication. I still feel fortunate about that because my family gave me a chance to make mistakes. For now, I feel lucky to be learning on this course, and I think I could improve my communication skills more by learning English.

For the concept of self:
I am satisfied with myself, and I have high levels of self-esteem. These perceptions control my life. I know my ability level and how many problems I could solve. However, for my studies at the university, there is still something about which I feel unsatisfied. My English level limits my opinion's output. And I am weak in English communication as well. Our classmate could communicate with others in three languages. Some of them worked when they were in high school. For their ability, I think that they are better than me. That is the reason I feel unsatisfied: I compare myself with others. I know I should compare myself, and I should be satisfied because I have advanced more than before. Unfortunately, humans are greedy. I want to change and improve myself.

I will keep going to study English by using my leisure time. Typing these words is simple but accomplishing them is more difficult. I have the motivation to get excellent IELTS scores. I will achieve that in the future.

For nonverbal communication:
The nonverbal principle includes the orientation of body language and paralanguage. Body language involves gestures, body appearance, facial communication, and touch communication. Paralanguages contain the tone, such as sighs and gasps. In addition, silence could demonstrate communication as well.

Regarding our study area, it is crucial to establish positive nonverbal communication. Considering the multi-ethnic background, we should respect others first, and we should also utilise nonverbal communication and motivate our ability to promote our study.

For example, we should keep friendly eye contact with our friends. A good attitude and active emotions could aid us in being impressed by knowledge during our learning in the classroom. After our classmates end their speeches, we should applaud and encourage them to improve their confidence, and we should also express our gratitude to our lecturer because of their conscientious teaching.

Therefore, positive directions for nonverbal communication could lead to an active future, which will facilitate our learning eventually.

The influence of interpersonal communication has changed me to strengthen the concept of respecting others, understand what makes good interpersonal communication, reflect on my past behaviors, and rethink my behaviors from the viewpoint of interpersonal communication. I truly appreciate our professor: Madam Lin. Her attitude of tolerance for students taught me to become a better person. And because she is an excellent person with high understanding and high emotional intelligence, even our communication face the challenges of cross-cultural communication and the misunderstood situation. Madam Lin taught me to reduce the degree of cultural pride, and it helped me to save my friend's relationship eventually.

As Chinese, we are always proud of our 2,000-year history and culture. My Indonesian friends and I had already remarked that this was insufficient for their small 200-year history and culture, but this arrogance has harmed our friendship. After I took a course in interpersonal communication, I also shared my thoughts with my friend again and apologized to him. Respect and understanding are the truths of interpersonal communication, and my friends also choose to forgive my gaffes.

Therefore, interpersonal communication helped me save my friendship and reflect on my behavior. In the process of respecting others, I also felt that my world became bigger. After becoming broadminded, I found that the world is full of flowers. The interpersonal communication course is real. It has changed me, and I hope that such courses will continue to exist in universities, so that more people can understand and respect others. In this way, the world will become better and better, and the relationships between people will become more harmonious.

The first topic I chose "The Self in Interpersonal Communication." The self-concept include the self- concept, self- awareness, and self- Esteem. In my opinion, the development of the self-character must admit the preconditions that cover economic independence and independent thinking. On the one hand, the economic independence could improve the control feeling of life. After the people work and earn money, they could arrange their life by themselves without the influencing factors of their family. Then the character starts to develop.

On the other hand, independent thinking has to point out that it was developed after people left their families’ influence. People think and rethink their lives and the whole world. Everyone have the worldview, but there are also a lot people following the public opinion, and they won’t criticize the opinion which surrounding in their life. For instance, most Chinese men won’t consider whether they need children before getting married. They follow the values in society that are advocated by the government. Accordingly, most people have never analyzed their lives, including a lot of women in China. The female was civilized by the romance drama, and most of them expect the romance and they overlook the development of their career. For instance, a lot of females ignore the periods of pregnancy and lactation. My cousin spent three years taking care of children without the ability to earn money. In her experience, I believe that I could never give up my career. In addition, the other concept of self-character is invisible and unquantifiable. It was established by the experience of people and the knowledge that was learned. I always believe that the memories is the crucial part of the characters. If one person lost his memories, his character would disappear even though he was still alive.

The second topic I choose non-verbal communication. It means that without voice communication, like body language, facial expression, and the emoji face in social media. Non-verbal communication is a way to show your attitude. During my time in Malaysia, I built relationships with my friends through the use of social media and nonverbal communication. The virtual message and digital information establish the friends’ communication.

The third topic I choose family communication. Family communication plays an important role in building relationships in people’s lives. This topic will be covered in the course by everyone. However, there are some people whose incomprehension gives real meaning to family communication because they use rules to control other family members. It will have many negative consequences in intimate relationships and will influence people for a long time, even across generations. Chinese families, in my opinion, lack the respect for family members that is part of Chinese traditional culture. Communication in Chinese culture must consider the filial piety of Confucius. It has existed and been used in Chinese culture for 2000 years. In the old Chinese culture, there is one simple word could explain the family relationship, "The women should follow their husband, the son should follow their father." There are no human rights in the old feudal society, which is based on the agrarian economy. In Chinese history, there has been a great deal of tragedy and resistance. Actually, Confucius' opinion is a wonderful expectation about society, but interests or authorities govern the people through mind control, and they want to establish a stable social structure using Confucius' ideas. Hence, most Chinese parents overlook their feelings about other family members. In the future, I hope that my family will be full of understanding and equality. Because I can choose the family I want to build.

Stephen Covey: The Inside-Out approach to personal and interpersonal effectiveness means to start first with self; even more fundamentally, to start with the most inside part of self -- with your paradigms, your character, and your motives. It is crucial for us to understand and consider the situation before we talk. Sincerity is always the best way to communicate with others.
