• The reason I chose a video showing a timeline of how the iphone has evolved through the years is because it reflects social change. Social change, is defined as “The transformation of culture and social institutions over time.” (Macionis, p. 526) The Iphone has transformed how people stay connected. With the new advances in apples technology people are now able to have a handheld computer, high quality camera, and cell phone all in one tiny device.

• The reason I chose this article is because it depicts collective behavior. “Collective behavior is activity involving a large number of people that is unplanned, often controversial and can bring about change.” (Macionis, p. 528) When many people gather in crowds to protest political change can occur as it attracts media attention from a number of people.

• I chose a clip of when Barack Obama became president because it shows a mass society,. “A society in which prosperity and expanding bureaucracy have weakened traditional social ties.” (Macionis, p. 539) The video exemplifies how history was made in a modern society as Obama became the first african american president. Which many people thought they would never see but, as a society we are moving towards a new diverse ways of thinking.

• The reason I choose this cartoon is because it depicts a class society meaning, “A capitalist society with pronounced social stratification.” (Macionis, p. 541) The image shows a man who can be described as greedy by the way he looks and is dressed in a nice suit who seems to not be helping the man in need. Instead he is adding more financial pressure to the man who clearly looks like he is already struggling with rent and the cost of living on a low wage job. Which reflects back to how our society is built on making the rich richer and the poor keeps on getting poorer.

• The reason I chose this quote is because it reflects how modernity has affected the way individuals define their true identity. “Mass-society theory suggests that so much social diversity, widespread isolation, and rapid social change make it difficult for many people to establish any coherent identity.” (Macionis, p. 542) If our culture and traditions are constantly changing people will always be in a battle to try to define their true self.

• I chose this image because it reflects the views on postmodernity where people believed that a modern society was going to bring great change to our society. However, “postmodern critics argue that science has failed to solve many old problems (such as poor health) and even created new problems (such as pollution and global warming).” (Macionis, p. 546) The image shows that technological advances like cars or mass producing factors have brought problems that are affecting our environment.

• I chose this video because it shows how modernization has helped raise the standard of living through agricultural advances. “Modernization theory claims that in the past, the entire world was poor and that technological change, especially the industrial revolution, enhanced human productivity and raised living standards in many nations.” (Macionis, p. 546) The video connects to this because new technology in farming allowed people to still grow crops for food no matter the season or climate conditions. Therefore raising living standards and steering away from a time when people faced food insecurity due to the seasons affecting crops.
