Cities change America

The picture I've chosen represents how cities changed America.

What is happening in this picture? This picture displays cities becoming more cosmopolitan, overcrowded, and modern. With the rapid population increase, people's perspective on their daily routine changed. From everyone being so close together, it was easier for people to understand each other and the occurrences happening around them. People saw areas that needed improvement and didn't hesitate to make these changes happen.

From this picture, I can also see that many people relied on small business's to buy food and other necessary items to survive. This shows how rich the business owners became. There businesses were used daily meaning that they made multiple profits each day. This shows the clear difference between a farmer and a business owners life.

Education

The picture I've chosen demonstrates the idea of higher education. On the left side of the image is a high school and on the right side of the image is a college university. When I searched the words "high school" and "college" in Google, mostly images of men near the schools came up. This shows men superiority still exists in the society we built today.

The idea for a strong and higher level of education became a MUST. A better system of Public Education was enforced. With this system, child labor decreased due to children attending school. The development of high schools and colleges changed education forever. While not everyone attended at this time, it sure did pay off for the future.

Were women allowed to receive an education? Forms of higher education gave women new opportunities. Women were still looked at as only "caretakers" but that idea would soon change. Women who were educated had more options in this restrictive environment.

Were African Americans able to receive an education? Yes, schools were segregated from Jim Crow Laws but blacks still had the opportunity for a higher education. African Americans opportunities were not as good as whites but at least they had potential rather than no chance at all. A good portion of African Americans got to attend the nations first black colleges.

The brief power point I made demonstrates examples of sports and entertainment that I will be discussing down below.

The hours of working conditions started to decrease, this lead many Americans with more time for relaxation. One enjoyment many shared was the participation in or observation of sports. Sports became a new pop culture. Many visited arenas to watch players play sports like baseball, football, basketball, and boxing.

Were there other forms of entertainment besides sports? Yes, other forms of entertainment involved singing, dancing, comedy acts, and even animals. A famous circus act that we still watch today, "The Greatest Show on Earth", started during this time.

Was there other ways for Americans to entertain themselves without having to go see a type of show or game? Yes, the use of bicycles became extremely popular. Both men and women used them for exercise purposes. They also rode bicycles to embody romantic dates.

The Portrayal of Women

I made a brief power point to display educated women's role in society. The pictures and political cartoon demonstrate the information below.

How did educated women stand out in society? Educated women saw alcohol as dangerous and wanted it banished. They saw alcohol as a bad habit that rose chances of violence. Alcohol was also a common reason for families income to decrease. These women became a part of a prohibition society that planned to legalize beliefs like this one.

Were women still seen as just "baby-makers" and "care-takers"? Unfortunately women will always be looked at in this way but during this time a change occurred. Many women came out of there homes and became a part of the outside world. Women got jobs or became a part of movements that changed the idea of gender roles. Half of societies women stayed unmarried and focused on there education.

How was the life of women who weren't educated? Uneducated women got jobs with very low wages and struggled with poverty. Some women let tenants stay in there homes for a monthly rent to earn extra cash. Many African American women were sharecropping. This was a tiring job for women; women had to work both night and day.

The Idea of Male Supremacy and Sexual limitations

This cartoon represents the idea that women can't be smart or capable of upholding a professional job. It displays how men look at women. It shows how men and women will never be looked at as equal.

How were men looked at? Men were looked at as supreme to women. Men got better job opportunities than women. Men saw their role in society as workers with good pay while they saw women as merely baby-makers and care-takers.

The cartoon has also made me realize that individuals have been using their voices to contribute thoughts and ideals towards society. The girl in the cartoon is wishing for things that everyone in the society should learn. This shows that aspects in society could begin to change. With the contribution of new thoughts, the Comstock law was legalized.

What did the Comstock law accomplish? The Comstock law banned the receiving of sexual books or objects. This law was meant to create a more pure and moral society.

How were homosexuals treated? Homosexuals stayed in a special areas where they would be together and safe from any objectors.

The Impact of the Print Revolution

The cartoon displays how easily people working for newspapers could twist the truth. Instead of writing the truth, some writers showed a form of fiction and creative writing. The use of the exaggerated and rumored titles got the readers attention and more money for the newspaper companies. The newspapers also used false interviews and frauds to back up there stories. This cartoon has monsters on it with false exaggerated titles. I believe the monsters represent the writers and how their greed lead them to become ugly.

Business owners realized that selling newspapers to people daily would be a huge money making industry. They figured people would be interested in whats happening around the nation. But they also needed a more interesting touch to sell papers so they added articles that appealed to men and women. Articles involving sports appealed to men. Articles relating to fashion and beauty appealed to women.

Did the newspapers only display invalid and untruthful articles? Of course not! Many articles written in newspapers were valid and truthful. But some parts of the news could be boring so the writers decided to spice it up by twisting the truth.

Did newspapers encourage education? I believe newspapers encouraged education due to the fact that individuals had to be able to read in order to buy and use them. Newspapers could of encouraged people to become writers as well. The print revolution changed people's views on reading and made reading more likable and popular.

Essential question: Did the new developments in cities change America for the better or worse?

The image I've chosen describes my response to this question perfectly.

While there was many faults, I believe cities changed America for the better. Without all these dimensions that occurred, America wouldn't be what it is today. Injustices had to happen, if they didn't then Americans wouldn't of learned that they have the power to use there valuable voices and cause change.
