Each student displays math and reading skills at or above grade level but receives failing grades in classes due to incomplete projects, cognitive skill scores on projects below 70%, and/or failure to complete content units by the assigned due dates. These students struggle with organizing work, managing time, prioritizing tasks, taking, and reviewing notes and retaining information.
The purpose of the group is to identify the underlying causes of poor academic performance, provide support and mentorship, assist with goal setting and attainment, and teach study and organization skills to increase assignment and project completion by assigned due dates and increase cognitive skill scores and decrease instances of receiving failing grades.

Student selection for this group was determined by data compiled and reviewed by Teachers, Counseling Staff and Administration during the regularly scheduled monthly data meeting.
Parents will be contacted by the counseling center staff to schedule conferences to discuss current student performance. One counselor, one administrator and one representative for the core content classes will be in attendance.
 During the conference, student performance will be discussed and the counselor in attendance will speak to the parent/guardian about the upcoming small group and extend the invitation to their child. Parents will be strongly encouraged to consent to participation. If consent is given, parents will be asked to sign a consent form and provided with a copy of the small group information (including days/times/lessons). 

Teachers and administrative staff will be given the opportunity to suggest students not previously identified in the data meeting/ not meeting all selection criteria, who could potentially benefit from the group.

Any students discussed will be reviewed and pre-screened by counseling staff (review of current academic standing, previous grades and test scores, disciplinary records etc.) 

Students deemed eligible will be pulled individually to speak to a counselor and to complete a short questionnaire. Parent conferences will follow to discuss the need and benefits of the group and to obtain consent.

On the completion of parent conferences, a finalized list of student participants will be emailed to core teachers, administrative staff, and counseling center staff.

Parents will be asked to review and sign a consent form which will include acknowledgement of their child’s temporary schedule modification, receipt of counseling center services, current academic standing and action plan to improve performance. •      Although they will not be directly addressed as the focus of a lesson in the group, students will have the opportunity to work on relationship building skills through activities which allow collaboration with other students. The topic will also be briefly discussed during lesson 2 (Effective Communication Skills). 

•      Pre-set group norms will be discussed during the informational session and the first meeting of the group. During the first meeting, students and counseling staff will collaborate in a joint effort to set additional norms and expectations for the group.  Norms will be revisited and reinforced regularly/ as needed.

•      While it will never be directly stated or shared with other students, indication of poor academic performance will be implied by participation in the group. Students will be reassured that any discussion of their academic progress will be held privately with counseling/teaching/administrative staff. During share-outs and/or group activities, students may become aware of the progress of others. Students will be encouraged to respect peers and keep any information shared during group time private. Students will also be advised not to share any information with the group which they would not be comfortable with others knowing as the counseling staff is not able to guarantee confidentiality.

Stage 2-

•      Counseling staff will motivate students to continue to be productive and move toward learning outcomes by engaging students in interactive activities, selecting content which allows for personal connections and application and creating/maintaining a relaxed, informal atmosphere. Observation, informal conferences and data collection will be used to gauge student progress.


Stage 3- 
•      At the close of the initial six sessions, the group will continue to meet for 2 additional sessions. Group members will work independently applying concepts from lessons 1-6. Counseling staff will meet with students individually to check in and gauge progress. Counseling staff will evaluate progress and determine if further attendance is necessary. Students will be informed that satisfactory progress has been made and they are able to return to normal advisory period classes. The option to attend the group as needed for support will be available on request (via email or in person request) (with one day prior notice). Counselors will continue to monitor progress, offer support and maintain communication to students no longer participating.  Confidentiality expectations will revisited at this time.

•      Due to the varying individual needs for support and motivation, I feel that utilization of the Path Goal Leadership Theory would be best suited for this group. Although students share the common goal of improving academic performance, each struggles in different areas and requires a different level of support. Path Goal Leadership changes to meet the individual needs of a person/situation. “Path goal leadership theory encourages a strong communication about goals and direction, with a strong relationship between the leader and the group. With a clear set of requirements and providing the tools to complete them, the leader can build a string of successes toward the end target”. (Jones,2015) Students attending this group will benefit greatly from guidance in goal setting and and the tools to help accomplish the goal.
