Character in Crisis

Susanna Kaysen does a good job of telling her story and sharing it with us. She explains why she did it and how. She goes through the thought process that led her there. She explained how she prepared herself for that moment and how to go through with it. She successfully shows empathy by letting herself feel and allowing herself to do what she needs afterward. How she felt lighter and she wasn't dead but that part of her was. The author became vegetarian because she fainted on the meat counter but it has a deeper meaning, she doesn't want to fall that deep ever again. She explains how you need a motive and she just didn't have good enough motives, she had more little ones that were more immature. I honestly didn't know how to feel about the passage, it was deep and shocking, her attempt didn't work but at the end it was the growth she had made throughout her process.

Do you think clothing can define a generation?

I do believe clothing can change a generation, it defines what is in style, how people want to look, and the standards for that certain generation. Clothing speaks volumes and style, depending on the brand as well. Clothing has a huge effect on how people view you and unfortunately, in some cases, it depends on how people see and treat you when you are out and about. Style matters and the way a person dresses describes their character and who they are. For example, wearing boots gives a certain aesthetic, just like an "Edgar" cut gives a guy a more street look. Baggy clothes and certain shoes definitely say a lot about how a person wants to be seen.

Define the word Home

Home can mean many things to different people but home to me is where I feel safe and respected. It can be a place or person that puts me at ease with what is happening around us. An example is my immediate family because whenever I'm with them I don't have to worry about anything else but just being in the moment. Another example of home to me is going to Europe, I do not have family, but something about the culture and how beautiful it is puts my mind at ease. There is no stress over there and it is so calming, the people are so generous and humble. They have so much beauty and creativity in the region and I'm just in love with it. My future home will smell like cinnamon and apple and you will see modern furniture. My kids will have their rooms decorated however they want, it will be clean with spiral stairs. It will be a two-story home with an open kitchen, I will also try my best to always have it decorated depending on the season or holiday, it will not be too far or too close to the city. I need a good method of travel but I also want it far enough to where we have privacy. I want a pool and an open backyard and a small garden in the front. I want my dogs to have their little section for playtime and have their room set up.

An older couple probably lives here and it just gives me old-money vibes. Smells like whiskey or Savage cologne. If the walls could talk I feel like it would represent the princess Belle from Disney. They would sing and be very energetic to host events and people. The house seems to have a lot of space to mingle with many people.

What age or moment would you choose to go back to? Advice to younger self....

I would go back to when I was around 7 years old and tell myself that life happens, nothing is perfect, and everything takes time. I would tell myself that people are mean but just because they have said something does not mean it is true. I would amplify how my tia and my family's approval or comparisons mean nothing and that you will learn to not depend on them with patience and time. You don't need them moving forward, once you get older you will learn who your true family is and who truly want to be in your life. Insults and disrespect are never ok even if they are older. I would also remind younger me that forgiveness is key to letting go and becoming a better person. Allow yourself to let go of things that have been said and learn how to speak and how to defend yourself without being disrespectful. I do not know if I would listen, I was young and thought that those things were normal. Overall I would just try to let younger me let go of those things sooner then I have.

Coffee

Coffee is like toffee without syrup and milk it's just beans.

Beans need to be grounded to be surrounded by filters.

Caffeine addictions are only seen between routines throughout a lifetime.

Energy is key to writing a documentary about beans.

Mexico

Mexico is traditional and unique but the food does not compare to here. Their kindness is very much like the Southern parts of the United States, everyone is so friendly and understanding as well as helpful. The people start conversations and immediately can tell your a visitor, your accent and some key words automatically have someone stand out. I was never born or raised in Mexico but I love to visit and see my family and eat the tacos on the corner of the gas station. Somethings are so close to my grandmas house that it is practically walking distance, and not only that but every Friday they have a yard sale on a certain street where the whole community gets together and sells old or new items. I have always struggled with both English and Spanish because I know the basics of both and I understand both but I could learn to be more proficient in many ways. I have recently been texting a lot more in Spanish and the difficulty in having to get used to it is insane, I never really thought about how hard it would be to use slang in another language or how to communicate with people my own age, I speak English all the time at school and mainly with people around my age. Spanish is something that I speak more when I'm trying to be formal but I just never realized how hard it would be to translate things in my own head. The language barrier for me knowing Spanish and it being my first language is pretty difficult because I am not caught up on all of their new slang. Mexico is still the life of the party and I took a quick trip out there for a quincenera and family is key because they made that whole trip ten times more fun. I got to see and go out more as well as I am getting older in Mexico there is more opportunities to see what it is truly about. The trip was one to remember and so far my favorite trip to Mexico.

What stood out to me was that people are "ignorant" and many people want to be seen in a certain class and believe that college does that for them. A lot of what stood out was how people see them as lower than everyone else because they have dirtier jobs. Still, as they stated in the video they make very good money and some apprenticeships can take up to 5 years which is more than a basic college education. People need to be more educated on what people do and who they are before judging, many blue-collar people make a comfortable living. Stop reading a book by its cover.

Social status

Why is someone's social status so important in society? Why do people feel the need to judge someone by the way they look, dress, or even by their job? Our society has become so judgemental of everything someone does, that many people stereotype and assume that everyone who looks the same or dresses the same ar the same. They are not. People categorize people into groups because of their experiences with certain types of people. For example, if someone encounters someone Mexican who doesn't know how to tip, that server will have that idea and stereotype them all into the same category. Many of us do this because we had one bad encounter or even a good one, our experiences with anyone is what set our vision on how we view them. Social status is seen as important in society because the higher and richer you look the more people seem to respect you, if you are more rich or look more rich you are viewed differently in society. Many people assume if they see working for others as a job less than, and if they don't see someone clean and wearing designer or looking presentable many people see that as lower than them. Everyone ha san opinion about something and none of it doesn't have to make sense to us but that's how society conforms.

Doctor burnout is a real thing. Doctors do and should have a life outside of their hospital and with new doctors coming in to assist with that it is decreasing it. Our first responders and physicians are the people we rely on for many things especially to keep us safe but we need to ensure that their safety is also being met. Mental health is also very important in dispatch we discuss how there could be hard calls and easier calls but you always are going to need an outlet to release all of those feelings. You should never take work feelings or situations home. Everyone is important and everyone needs something to relieve all of that stress with. Not only doctors but every occupation reaches a burn out point, you just have to keep pushing through.

Ten Lessons

There will always be sharks in the world but you have to keep going, you have to push through learn from them, and move on. Bad people and people that hurt you will always exist but you have to keep going because life doesn't stop. If you want to change the world you have to not ring the bell, you have to have hope and take risks. Never ever give up because what we start is what can change the world to become a better place. Not only that but we are the ones who can decide on giving up or pushing through all of the obstacles that life throws at us. People are not always meant to stay but they are temporary to help you understand that evil and mean people do exist. You push through no matter what because with hope and people who truly care about you anything is possible. You are who you decide to be, be great so you can be the best version of yourself.

Bridging the Divide

The American Exchange program. I would do this program because it's always good to experience new things and be open to new opportunities. It is free and the experience lets you understand the different cultures of different parts of the US. You learn and meet new people, the program is to get everyone away from the stereotypes and put things into effect to educate our uprising generation. I would do it because I love traveling and making more memories.

Research Question: How could we start programs that allow students the opportunity to travel?
