There is a major visual class divide in many of the areas. There was already a class divide from middle class to the upper class in many central parts of Cairo. But there are areas of ultra-poor Egyptians. 1 in 4 Egyptians live off of $1.65 USD per day. Who also struggle to afford human necessities like water and electricity. One of the biggest issues has been overpopulation. In the 1950’s, A revolution led by Muhammad Naguib overthrew the long ruling monarchy and thats when the city really started expanding north into the Nile delta. The growth of the city was constantly fueled from the improvements in transportation and industrialization. It then constantly expanded faster and faster than the city could actually support. Which has meant that the poorer population has been squished and have been forced to find housing for themselves and sit right beside the richer population pointing to major economic divides. The government doesn’t hide the fact that they are more hospitable and supportive of the richer population.
