"The cotton dress should have looked strange, but all I could think of was that I should ask my mother if I couldn’t wear a dress to school, too, instead of my Indian clothes" (Rau 2).
This quote shows identity from those around you because the Indian girl in her class didn't want to wear Indian clothes, instead she was choosing to adapt to those around her and dress like them in order to fit in. She is finding her identity by conforming to those around her instead of her own culture.

The teacher pointed at me and asked me to stand up. "Now dear, tell the class your name.
I said nothing.
"Come along," she said, frowning slightly. "What's your name, dear?"
"I don't know," I said, finally. (Rau 2)

This quote shows that you can get identity through your name when Santha and Premila go to their new school and the headmistress makes them change their names because they're "much too hard for her." (Rau 1). Our names shape our identity. For example, when someone says our names, our attention is instantly locked on them. It makes us happy to see that someone is recognizing us and not just calling us, "hey you." When Santha gets her new, more English name, she felt as if she was becoming a different person at school, like a dual personality. Even just getting a new name fan vastly change who you are and how you act.

But I put it

happily away, because it had all happened to a girl called Cynthia, and I never was really particularly interested in her." (Rau,5)
This is an example of identity from a name because this girl has two different names, Cynthia and Santha, and to her, they are two different people/identities in her eyes. Cynthia is the girl at school, who experiences and adapts to the new environment around her. Cynthia is who she pretends to be, and Cynthia isn't the true her. Santha is the girl she truly is, who follows by her Indian culture and has a flourishing love for her family. This girl is Santha outside of school, where she isn't discouraged about being different.
