THE BURNING OF MONTAG'S HOUSE

Beatty taunts Montag for a bit and Mildred runs out of the house, a suitcase in her hand, to a taxi waiting at the curb. Montag realizes that she is the one who called the alarm.

Faber, through the earpiece, tries to figure out what’s going on. Montag stands around dazed that this is happening to him.

Faber realizes what’s up and advises Montag to run. Meanwhile Beatty has flicked his igniter and is admiring the beauty of the fire. Man is drawn to flame, he says, because it is perpetual motion; it is the one thing man always wanted to invent but never did. Fire will rid him of his burdens – like Montag.

Beatty insists that Montag burn his entire house himself, with a flame thrower.

Montag goes in and starts burning – the bedroom, the cosmetics, Mildred’s stuff. This is all very satisfying for him, but Beatty reminds him that, actually, he’s there to burn the books, remember?

He burns everything, the dreaded television screens in the parlour. When he’s finished, Beatty intends to arrest him.

By the time the burning house falls down, it’s 3:30 in the morning. The firemen, including Captain Beatty, are standing outside watching it fall.

MONTAG KILLS BEATTY

Montag asks the Captain if his wife was the one to turn in the alarm. Beatty, nods, but her friends had already done so earlier that evening. He feels as though his life and identity have been buried beneath his fallen house.

Beatty makes many sarcastic comments, making fun of Montag and belittling him in every way, he then starts hitting him, and Faber begs him to run away through the earpiece. Finally, the Captain hits him hard enough to knock the earpiece out. Beatty picks it up and hears Faber calling. He tells Montag that they’ll trace it and find his friend.

Montag points the flame thrower at Beatty – though he believes his hands, not he himself, have done it.

Beatty laughs, obviously not taking the threat seriously.

Montag burns Beatty to ashes. Then he knocks out the two remaining firemen.

THE NEW HOUND

After killing Beatty, Montag turned around and the Mechanical Hound was there. With a final bound, the Hound soared into the air, descending upon Montag from a considerable three-foot height above his head. Its spidery legs extended, and the procaine needle thrust out its solitary menacing tooth. Montag intercepted it with a burst of fire, creating a splendid burst of yellow, blue, and orange petals that enveloped the metal dog, giving it a new outer layer as it collided with Montag and hurled him ten feet backward against the trunk of a tree, carrying the flame-gun with him.

As the Hound clamped onto his leg, stabbing the needle momentarily before being lifted into the air by the fire, it shattered at the joints, and its interior exploded in a single flush of red, resembling a skyrocket affixed to the street. Montag lay there, observing the lifeless yet animated creature twirl in the air and perish.

THE NEWS: "Montag is dead"

This image represents the moment in which the country gets to know the breaking news (that were being transmitted live on TV): Montag had been killed, justice had been made. But, what policeman didn't tell that it was not Montag who had been killed, but a random man who was peacefully walking in the street. This event made us think that it was all a policeman technique, to hide the fact that they had not found Montag yet and had to do a good impression (of justice) to the society

MAKING READING FRIENDS

After having run and swam for a long while, Montag reaches an island. There, he meets a group of wise men who, instead of keeping books hidden (as Montag had been doing all along), they would read them, keep important knowledge in their memories and then burn them, in order not to be caught by the police/fireman. In this scene we can see Montag with this new group of friends, enjoying a nice conversation before something happens...

THE EXPLOSION

In this last scene of the chapter, an explosion occurs. As the men bring Montag into their community, an atomic bomb falls on the town, turning it into ashes. The next morning, Montag leads everyone back to town. It was all very violent. Although this ending isn’t utopian, it does suggest a bit of desire for a greater future, one that may upward thrust like a phoenix from the literal ashes, as Granger suggests. Now, Montag is on Earth, and for the first time in his life, he has free time to think about himself. He remembers lines from Ecclesiastes because he stands in his ear without interfering with the powerful show on television or "the family." And, despite Montag's belief that he and Faber are the only ones willing to face the firemen, Montag now knew the entire team was there, he was not alone.
