10 Keys to Improving Behavior & Academic Success by Boosting EQ ( SEL, AR )

EQ- Emotional Intelligence

A feeling is your brain is taking in info and processing it. The way our brain and body make sense of what is happening in our environment. Feeling itself provides information. Feelings have a purpose. A behavior will continue because it is being reinforced.

You teach kids the 5 feeling responses- then they determine WHERE they are feeling it. Once they can determine that, they gauge on a scale from 1-10 how much of that emotion are you feeling? Rage 10- Mad- 5, 6- Frustrated 3,4- Sarcastic or Irritated 2,3

This will move them away from their all or nothing thinking. It establishes a scale

Shame and judgement about emotions.

Anxiety is fear.

5 main feeling groups- Scared, Anger, Excited, Sad, relaxed "where are you feeling that emotion?¨"turns on regulatory response

( My feelings workbook )

Teachers are being second hand traumatized- we need training and education on how to deal with our students effectively. Teachers must establish healthy authority and we are in charge. Intense with voice tone- make your point and then lower your voice to show you care.

When kids feel anger they want to feel control and power. Circumstances that they live in takes away that power and control. Anger is fear. Best self defense is your mind. "Make your wizard mind meet your lizard brain. ¨ chime and breathing technique. raise your hand when you can ´ t hear the chime anymore. Until they find the truth about anger and channel it in a positive way, they won´t get it right the 1st way. They have to make the decision to want to change but it will change their life. Have to get them to the belief of never giving up. We have to give them the hope and the information as to what anger is. Kids can become addicted to the adrenaline of the anger.

Kids watch your emotions and physical responses. They watch for survival.

Watch the language and shift it- is the feeling good or bad to is it uncomfortable and\or comfortable. Are people expressing their feelings or are they expressing their thoughts. Separate the feeling from the choice. I can have an uncomfortable feeling and make a right choice. Compare it to walking up a big hill. You may slip and fall but the more you walk the easier it will get and you will succeed.

Managing Emotions- Children who experience trauma have a lower ability to manage their emotions. less cortisol, etc. Every one of us has an emotional reservoir. Children with trauma have less of a reservoir. "Healing Hand Template.¨ Children remember a symbol more than words. ( Hand symbol ) They can remember their hand and remember to make good choices. Template to plan out trigger responses. ( Get a book of mazes for angry kids ) ( If their heart rate isn´t up have them run sprints and then do the maze )

Kids in general are being put into adult roles. Children are becoming the center of the universe before they are mentally ready. We are breeding entitled humans. Our culture has flipped it. We changed the role formation. As they get older they will start to determine who they want to be. Putting kids into inappropriate roles. Kids need boredom and downtime. Parents are over scheduling to control. It is impeding children´s development.

How do you grow empathy? You never know when your "seeds" will hit and benefit them.

Be authentic

Plant seeds- (show Nick Vujicic 4:17)-Inside out empathy scene- Bing Bong loses his rocket- sadness validates his feelings- listens and didn´t try to fix it like Joy

Seize powerful moments

Use tech relevant real life videos/ movies

Remember the base of every person

We are all seeking love and acceptance. Grows with human connection. We are connecting less in person- gamers, social media, etc. You need to feel all emotions- ( goody bags at birthday- ribbons at competitions ) We are teaching kids to avoid feelings. Pain is necessary for human functioning. Its a hard or uncomfortable feeling.

Interventions and Ideas:

-Angry Soda bottle- two plastic soda bottles- sprite- when anger happens its energy- it builds- if you dont do something with it you explode or boil over- tell me something that bothers you. Shake the soda bottle up and then you say now open the bottle without it exploding. Did you know there is a way to open it up without it exploding? You have to open it right away. Open it slowly and close it, and do it repeatedly. Let your anger out in a healthy way slowly and hold it. let it out slowly and hold it until it is gone.

Grounding statement- regulate a human being when you realize they are becoming dysregulated. For some kids when kids get hyper aroused- their nervous system is active ( tapping foot and anxious ) maybe before a big assignment or an amusement park. Overwhelming things. They are unable to self regulate. Between rides or transitions- I need you to give them a task or statement. ¨Johnny I need you to pick that up.¨ Establishes healthy authority in a non demanding way. We are asking too much and not telling. Healthy authority figures. It calms them down. You are grounding them. They need healthy structure .

One Minute Scolding- It ´ s not in anger . Its passion. Teaching a human being another angle in life. ( Guy talking about a girl in a sexualized way- what if that girl goes home and is molested. You have no idea what other people are going through. )

In conversations with students:

Use students names-nicknames they usually go by especially when talking to them

Protect students bubble-give them space. Be respectful with students physical boundaries.

Be in a learning position-work with students to come with a solution to help them succeed. Learn from them on what they might need to help their situation

Be aware of your voice volume- embarrassed students can’t process. When you talk quietly, students escalate in their brain. They will be curious in what you’re saying and it will deescalate their heightened emotions. Practice the skill of voice volume so that you aren’t mirroring students voice level.

Prizes don’t give as much mastery and internalize change. Students even kindergartners, can tell when you’re using prizes to control their behavior

Behavior isn’t all on the teacher, you need to make a system out of it. Teachers are only one part of it.

Learn to persevere even when your brain telling you to quit

ex)a student is defiant in learning algebra and asks when they will ever use these skills. You may never learn the algebra but you will learn the act of trying something hard even when you have no want to learn it.

PBIS- morph into skills instead of rules

Leading the moment- instead of reacting on impulse, use skills in those moments of students behavior

Come back after emotions are not heightened anymore and devise a plan to fix the problem. What are your beliefs, what are your expectations and what’s your system to keep it in place

Professional learning correlates into student learning. If you teach in a powerful way, your kids will benefit and working with other teachers will help your children grow

It’s easier to give teachers professional development, it’s harder to make teachers a better human being.
