One of the key takeaways for me was the introduction to antimicrobial resistance and its impact on public health. I learned about the history of antimicrobial use, the mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance, and the factors contributing to its emergence and spread. This knowledge has helped me appreciate the importance of responsible antimicrobial use and the need for novel antimicrobial discovery to combat this global threat.

Additionally, the course covered how to visualize microorganisms through various microscopy techniques, which was fascinating to me. I learned about the different types of microscopes and their applications in microbiology, including bright-field, phase-contrast, and fluorescence microscopy. This knowledge will be invaluable in my future studies and research.

Finally, I gained an understanding of the difference between harmful and useful microorganisms. I learned about the role of beneficial microorganisms in human health, including the gut microbiome and its impact on our immune system and overall well-being.

Overall, Week 1 was an enriching experience for me, and I look forward to applying this knowledge in my personal and professional life.

-Sterilization is the process in which all microorganisms besides their spores are killed.
-Disinfection is the process in which the microbial population ( pathogenic / non pathogenic ) is reduced and NOT all microorganisms are killed. Disinfectant is mostly used on inanimate objects and is not safe for human.
-Sanitization  is the process in which there is reduction of microbial population upto a limit which is considered as safe for public health.
 ( For eg. In hotels, the plates are sanitized by sanitizer/sanitizing agent ).
-Antisepsis is the process by which an infection is treated by antiseptic agent.
That is antiseptic agent can be applied on living tissue to treat the wound , so antiseptic agent is safe for human. 
Dettol can act as both disinfectant and antiseptic agent.

We also learnt about chemotherapy. And understood the misconception that chemotherapy doesn't mean only cancer treatment but the condition in which any chemical agent is used for therapeutic purpose  is called as chemotherapy. And that chemical agent used for it , is called chemotherapeutic agent.  For eg. If we take paracetamol for fever then it means that we are in chemotherapy ! 

We also discussed about types of chemotherapeutic agents i.e 

We then moved on to Types of Antibiotic agent  i.e they can be classified as broad spectrum antibiotic ( acts on variety or different types of bacteria ) and narrow spectrum antibiotic ( acts on ONLY specific type of bacteria.)
When the exact causative agent is not known then we give broad spectrum antibiotic to the patient and when the causative agent is known we give narrow spectrum antibiotic to the patient.
In the latest video we learnt about the differences between drugs and antibiotics that All drugs are not antibiotics but all antibiotics can be classified as drugs. Antibiotics are chemical agent used to kill or inhibit bacteria. It is also used to treat the bacterial infections. It is not mandatory for an antibiotic to act as therapeutic agent. Drugs are chemical agents which is used  more in therapeutic purposes . It is not mandatory for the drug to act against bacteria eg. Paracetamol -used to treat fever  is a drug and not an antibiotic ! 
One more example of drug is the pain killer which is not an antibiotic..

I got to learn about an assortment of microbial growth control techniques, including sterilization, sanitization, disinfection, asepsis, and chemotherapy. Furthermore, I grasped the fallacy that chemotherapy is not merely an approach to treatment for cancer; rather, it is the use of chemical agents to kill or inhibit the growth of microbes within host tissue.

Understood the types of chemotherapeutic agents such as antibiotic agents, antiviral agents, antifungal agents, and antiprotozoal agents, which are effective only against bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa, respectively.

Concluded the week’s session with a differentiation between antibiotics and drugs, i.e., "All drugs are not antibiotics, although all antibiotics can be considered to be drugs."

The second week's session was particularly instructive, and I really look forward to acquiring more knowledge in the weeks to come.

As a lab technologist, the first week content refreshed my memory about the basics of microbiology, what microorganisms are, their types, their classification, their types and their size; in addition to understanding the human microbiome. The lectures were very clear and easy to understand. The readings were interesting. The first reading was very interesting, especially the clinical focus part, which discussed the prions, as they were not mentioned previously in the content. The reading about the integrative human microbiome project was the most interesting part: their influence on diseases or on conditions like preterm births. 

The activity was fun to do. It would be helpful to have more fun and quick activities. 

One term caught my attention was astromicrobiology.

Overall, the first week was interesting and a great experience; I am looking forward to the upcoming week’s content.
