I think the main conditions associated with disability would be noncommunicable diseases, also known as chronic conditions, as these often develop as a result of a range of factors (environmental, personal etc) and are evidently quite prevalent within Australia’s population. These are also conditions that are driven by modifiable behaviours and come about as time goes on, but people often don’t the effects of these conditions until the impact is quite severe and affecting their everyday life. According the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (2020), chronic health conditions are the leading cause of illness, disability and death in Australia, and often coexist with some form of disability as 50% (2.8 million) of people with 1 or more chronic conditions also have disability. The most common chronic conditions include coronary heart disease, stroke, diabetes, arthritis and related disorders, back pain and problems, osteoporosis, asthma, and emphysema. Furthermore, for about 3 in 4 people (77%) people with disability, their main form of disability is physical and includes diseases of the musculoskeletal system and connective tissue (30%), ear and mastoid process (8.4%), circulatory system (6.3%), and nervous system (6.7%). For the remaining 1 in 4 (23%), their main form of disability is mental or behavioural including intellectual and developmental (6.5%), mood affective (3.8%), and dementia and Alzheimer’s disease (2.6%).

Musculoskeletal disorders were the most commonly reported (30%) physical disorders, including conditions such as arthritis and back disorders. Behavioural and mental disorders were also shown but they were less common in people with disability as 'main condition" (23%) (ABS, 2018).
Being exposed to health risk factors, prevalence of long-term health conditions and, demographic and socioeconomic characteristics increase the likelihood of a person (including people living with disability) of developing a disease or health condition (behavioural or biomedical) (WHO,2001).
Food and nutrition, weight, substance abuse and physical activity have a major impact on the mental and physical well being of people with disability and without disability. Some on the most common conditions seen in people with disability are: Overweight, Coronary heart disease, heart failure, stroke, hypertension, diabetes, cancer, and chronic kidney disease (ABS, 2018).

This includes coronary heart disease, stroke, diabetes, arthritis, back pain, osteoporosis, asthma, and emphysema. Chronic conditions are the leading cause of illness and disability in Australia. Half of the people with at least one of these conditions also have a disability (AIHW, 2022).

The main conditions that I associate with disability include chronic health conditions such as COPD, stroke, heart disease, diabetes, and osteoporosis. I also think that mental illness has a large impact on disability, but is under-reported, especially in older generations. My understanding of the conditions associated with disability has developed through completing this degree, where causes of burdon on the Australian health system has previously been investigated. AIHW (2020) stated that the following chronic conditions are associated with disability:
emphysema, stroke, arthritis, back problems, coronary heart disease, osteoporosis, diabetes and asthma.

Australian Institute of Health and Welfare.
