Dave Eggers The Circle by Tyke O'Brien

SECRETS ARE LIES. SHARING IS CARING. PRIVACY IS THEFT. With the declaration of these statements throughout, what does Eamon hope to convince The Circlers of (as also reinforced by Mae's supposed "Enlightenment")? Consider any or all of them, linking to what you know from the whole story [FWYK]. Remember: answer as if you were on Eamon's side. What is his rhetoric enforcing? [Not what's behind it all.] BONUS for quoting any other words or phrases from the story.

Secrets are lies. Not telling people things / keeping secrets is, in a way, hiding the truth. If you're hiding the truth, you're lying. Mae explains, "Well, when there's something kept secret, two things happen. One is that it makes crimes possible. We behave worse when we're not accountable. That goes without saying." Mae believes that hiding things and keeping secrets liberate people from being held responsible. Eamon wants the Circlers to believe SECRETS ARE LIES so all the Circlers hold themselves responsible and honest. Eamon uses rhetoric to convince Mae and the circles why his words are true. For example, using the slogan, "SECRETS ARE LIES."

Eamon says that not allowing everyone to see every part of you is equivalent to lying. He says that when we keep what we are doing secret, we are not being held accountable for our actions. Secrets lead to the unknown, and we assume the worst in people and lie to ourselves about things that would be clear if we didn't keep secrets. He uses deliberative rhetoric to try to convince the audience that they need to stop keeping secrets, or else they are withholding their experience from those who aren't able to experience them.

He believes that "secrets are lies.". and he is reinforcing the idea that lying is bad and that lying is the epitome of selfishness. Technology helps those in need, and those who refuse to improve their own lives by using technology do so despite the fact that it helps those who are already in pain. and that the right to privacy is unnecessary and selfish.

Through the three slogans, Eamon tried to convince the Circlers to believe that keeping secrets and having privacy made them immoral through propaganda.

For "Secrets are Lies", he believed that secret can both "make crime possible" and "inspire speculation". Mae's enlightenment is realizing this is true, for she believed she will behave better when being watched.

For "Sharing is Caring", Eamon believed that if people don't share their experiences to others, they are just being selfish, we should give everyone else what we see. And that leads to "Privacy is theft", he's trying to convince people of that everyone has the right to have the experience that others would be having. For example, regarding of Eamon's son Gunner born with cerebral palsy, he believed that if people keep their experiences private, they are stealing Gunner's right to experience the same.

The credo "sharing is caring" is important because what is a world without sympathy and empathy. "if you care about your fellow human beings, you share what you know with them...if you care about their plight, their suffering, their curiosity, their right to learn and know anything the world contains, you share with them." (157) The only way humanity can move forward is with collaboration and contribution. (This is what Eamon would think this is NOT what me and Aubrey think)

He uses the idea of guilt and compassion for the disadvantaged and curious as motivation for his Circlers to continue broadcasting their experiences to the world. He advocates for transparency and has a conversation with Mae as an example of what their supposed devotion should look like.

"The Circle" is a really interesting example of how credo can be oppressive. In our era of digital-reliance for news and accessible knowledge, Eggers' story serves as a reminder of the unforeseen dangers of a shift to an online world--specifically how the so-called "goodness" of sharing our lives w/the world can really come back to bite us. In a passage where Bailey describes how Mae deprived the world of her experience on the lake by not recording it, Eggers writes, "Knowledge is a basic human right. Equal access to all human experiences is a basic human right." (156) Bailey, the head of the Circlers, stresses the importance of recording these memories, as some individuals, like his son, cannot experience them for themselves. And while the Circlers' mission does seem inherently good, it obviously appears like there are other things in the works that keep the Circlers content with what they are doing. One of these things (that Bailey uses and warps so wickedly) is incentives. Like in the quote, Bailey reinforces the idea that knowledge is a basic right. On the outside, it seems like the Circlers are simply relieving the plight of the unfortunate by videotaping memories, but it should also be considered that not taking these memories results in a loss of Circler "points". Bailey mixes a wicked brew using a combination of these incentives and his credos: "SECRETS ARE LIES; SHARING IS CARING; and PRIVACY IS THEFT" and uses it to drive fear into the Circlers so that they keep on marchin' along.

Silent oppression can be the most deadly...mwahahahahaa

Secrets are lies. A secret is something that is concealed and hidden from certain people. It's not shared knowledge but more of a concealed confidential matter. Secrets drive wedges between people, groups, and classes. The circle urges people to be more loyal and honest people that look to be selfless and help other people instead of keeping things to themselves so only the have access to benefiting their lives.
