In the end Gran-da ended up being killed by the SOS men because of disobeying the flag by trying to burn it.

The theme of Old Glory is freedom is sacrifice. Granda was talking about how the flag has no meaning of freedom anymore since all of the citizens have no more freedom. He wanted to have freedom again and he wanted everyone to have freedom aswell. So Granda went to where everyone would notice his actions and protested. He sacrificed himself so everyone could have freedom again.

The theme represents the story because Gran-Da probably did'nt like how the government and laws worked in the United States, and he wanted more freedom. He felt strongly about that he even protests against it and sacrifice for what he thinks is right. Even though protesting is allowed in the Unites States now, in 2041 it isn't. Then he got a punishment from the laser.

That relates to the theme because Grand- da had to make a sacrifice of his own life to try to got his point across to the society and have freedom for what they believe in.

So because of that, Gran-da, from the story, chose to not follow the rules and to tell the truth. He said that the flag did not mean anything. When reminding everyone this, he was shot by the S. O. S. in return. He sacrificed himself to remind everyone what freedom was.

Another example is when Gran da goes to burn the flag for his freedom he gets killed because Donald was protecting his own freedom (he also gets freed from the distopic society he knew he lived in). Also freedom is shown when Donald and some random people realize what the world would be like if everyone had free thought and free action.

I think that the theme "freedom demands sacrifice" is a theme in Old Glory because Grand-da died trying to show the people of his home that they were living in a dystopia. The sacrifice was Grand-da's life, and the freedom was sort of achieved, since some people listened to him. Unfortunately, Grand-da died before he could really make his point, but he got the basic message across. If the SOS men made a big deal about what Grand-da did, you can infer that Grand-da was doing something major.

It made the theme, "Freedom demands sacrifice" emerge from the story. It does because Grand-Da made a sacrifice of his own life to get freedom or prove that freedom is worth a sacrifice. We don't know if it worked ,but he tried. He was probably able to send a message to a handful of people there. Old Glory is kind of like 2081 because Grand-Da and Harrison Beurgeron both made a sacrifice to spred a message

Freedom demands sacrifice is a good theme for Old Glory because it is shown throughout the book as a theme should be. The theme is shown when Granda takes his flag down despite the sacrificial risk that the Uncle could find out. This is also shown when Donald calls the Uncle because Donald was protecting the freedoms he has, despite the fact that he is sacrificing Granda to the SOS men. A third way this is shown is when Granda sits up on the bandstand and fights for his freedom and believes he can bur n the flag even though he can't. He did this despite losing his life to the lasers of the SOS men. The last way this theme is shown is when Granda sacrificed he and his family's reputation to explain to the people what the flag used to stand for and why it was so important.
