[The Garden Party, 11]

1. In our work of art we have not recreated the scene exactly but instead captured the essence of the exchange between Laura and her mother. Wherein Laura is trying to break through her mother's apathy.
2. Subtle and precise
3. Third person limited point of view (shows character's thoughts and feelings indirectly through Laura's perception of their actions), tone and diction (Mrs Sheridan's choice of words shows how she views the clear separation between the middle class and the lower - 'people like that' are the lower class and 'everybody' is the middle class), indirect characterization (characters' personalities are shown through their effect on others, their lack of care for said effect, or their unwillingness to let others affect them)

1. The author has captured reality in this writing because it paints us a story of the true discrimnation between the poor and the rich. This is a very real issue, as it isn’t uncommon to see, not just the rich, but the more fortunate in general poking fun at the less fortunate. 2. It is both realistic because it may happen in real life, and is also, unfortunately, true, as there isn’t always sympathy between the two groups. 3. The author also uses the third person, omniscient POV in this part of the story shows the terror the girls are put under by being yelled at. The diction also makes the richer adult sound more judgemental and critical of the Kelveys. It also could seem like a satire of the rich, making them seem like this moody, mean, and unreasonable parent.

"“How dare you ask the Little Kelveys into the courtyard?” said her cold, furious voice. “You know as well as I do, you're not allowed to talk to them. Run away, children, run away at once. And don't come back again” said Aunt Beryl. And she stepped into the yard and shooed them out as if they were chickens."

The writer has captured reality in the work of art to a large extent through tone (in the quote) and indirect characterization. The words of the aunt of the Kelveys is often expressed by people of a higher social standing who separate themselves from people of another social class. The words that we would describe the theme in the work are painfully true and stereotypical. Kezia didn't know that she was not supposed to talk to the Kelveys. She thought it was just a normal thing to ask someone to come play with them. This is painfully true because many kids have to follow their parents' rules or ideals even though they don’t know why, especially when you are a kid. Kezia’s aunt got mad at them for hanging out with the Kelveys, due to their social class. This work can be stereotypical because people from higher social classes tend to be around people that are part of their class, which can be passed to their children.

"How long do they stand there? Both, as it were, caught in that circle of an earthly light, understanding each other perfectly, creatures of another world, and wondering what they were to do in this one with all this blissful treasure that burned in their bosoms and dropped, and silver flowers, from their hair and hands?"

Katherine Mansfield captures the reality of attraction and sexuality in Bliss to a moderate extent. Her depiction of Pearl and Bertha as they look at the pear tree is dated yet nuanced. In comparison to the present world and how people of the modern age approach tension/attraction to one another, the way in which this scene is written passionately expresses Bertha's feelings to the readers while saying nothing to Pearl herself. One technique that Mansfield has used to portray this is tone and diction. As Bertha and Miss Fulton stood looking at the moon, they were "wondering what they were to do in this one with all this blissful treasure," referring to the fact that they had previously been compared to creatures of another world. This word choice shows the outdated views of their time period, and the nuanced meaning that can be drawn from those words.

Detachment from Reality (Matt V, Annika, Alejandro, & Grace)

Quotation: ““An actress-are ye?” And Miss Brill smoothed the newspaper as though it were the manuscript of her part and said gently “"Yes, I have been an actress for a long time."

1. The author has captured reality to an extent very comparable to real life. There are always different people, doing different things and saying different things. Miss Brill placed herself in the shoes of an observer, a witness to the vicissitudes of life. Her role as an actress is that of an observer. In real life we see this, if you go to a park or a mall you will always see the young people, hustling and bustling, but it will be the elders sitting and reminiscing about their old days and judging people. Miss Brill does that but she doesn't admit to herself that she is in denial of her status.
2. I would describe Ms. Brill as an individual trying to find purpose in her existence. Somebody undergoing an existential crisis, who is inherently lonely and doesn't have much to do, she feels left out and feels very negative about herself. The theme of this passage is how left out and lonely one can feel by just watching, and how sometimes it's better to create an illusion than face reality. This is shown as a nuance in this story. On one hand she is happy that she realizes everything is basically on a ‘stage’ and she is just an actress and everyone is happy and notices her and they all play a part when in reality she isn't that important.
3. The author uses Miss. Brill’s stream of consciousness to portray her detachment from reality. This is done by the writer using her inner dialogue to show how she makes observations that are far from reality. Although she sees herself as an observer she has become detached from reality and her portrayals of the people around her are an example of this. These observations are a part of her stream of consciousness.

She was able to show the discrimination between social classes and the shame associated with interacting with someone from a lower class.

An exaggerated truth

Indirect characterization (actions and mannerisms) specifically Aunt Beryl (Olivia) exaggerating her opposition to the idea of her niece associating with the poor girls, as well as Kezia's (Ceci) shame of being caught with the Kelveys (Teresa). Also the symbolism of the house and the perfect life that Kezia is showing the Kelvey girls, which is denied by the history of not only the Burnells but the choices of the Kelveys family. Why doesn't she keep her silly old mug at home?"

In this story, Mansfield has captured reality by depicting the very loose ties with reality middle-aged people sometimes have. As the story progresses it becomes apparent that Miss Brill does not see reality as it is, which is what we have shown in the scene above.
