I consider chunking a key strategy that I often try to implement in my lectures. I know I need to take breaks and 'shut up" so my students' voices can be heard. I normally present a critical thinking question or have them analyze something. These pauses are great to keep the flow of the class and most importantly make them excited about what I 'm talking about.

I already do a lot of chunking. Perhaps because I'm teaching a technical subject (finance) and very aware of cognitive overload.

I used to think that every pause made had to have an elaborated activity, as a way to "entertain" them. But I realize now that it is just a pause to help them process all the information and the retrieval can be done in a simple way.
