Finding Langston takes place in 1946 and tells the story of an eleven-year-old boy named Langston who moves to Chicago from rural Alabama with his father after the death of his mother. The journey of Langston and his father is part of what is known as The Great Migration. Readers get to view Langston's experience of the challenges and differences presented with living in a new city with a new life and a new school with new faces.

I believe that this book is a wonderful choice to incorporate into your classroom. This novel provides the struggles of a young black boy during a historical time period who struggles to adapt to his new life after the loss of his mother. It teaches the students/readers the history of a significant movement that shaped a group of people and how it impacted their lives. This novel also teaches them the beauty of poetry and how they can connect what they read in literature with their everyday lives.

By reading this novel, learning about the history of The Great Migration, and being supplied with primary sources, students will come to an understanding of a significant event in American history. They will understand the impact The Great Migration had on six million African Americans who traveled from rural South to urban North. They will come to a deeper understanding of how the main character in the book felt.

By reading this novel, analyzing the meaning of the poetry featured in the story, making connections between challenges faced in the story and real life, and identifying the elements of the plot, students will come to an understanding of a book as a whole. They will be able to explain how each scene chronologically fits together to provide the overall structure of a story. They will also begin to develop an understanding of what a theme in a story is and how they can relate historical fiction literature to their lives.

In Finding Langston, Langston comes across a portrait gallery of African American writers in the Chicago Public Library, including Langston Hughes. He becomes interested because he shares the same name as him, Langston opens up one of his books and begins to relate his feelings to the ones reflected in the poems. Reading poetry is something that Langston begins to spend his time doing after school in the book. Students will work in small groups, taking turns reading and analyzing the meaning of some of Langston Hughes's poems provided to them.

Great Padlet! I really like how you connected the story to real-life images that students can look at. When teaching any historical fiction novel, I think it's important to share some photographs that were taken at the time. This shows the students that this was a real event.

I also like your shared experiences lesson plan. It gets students thinking about the story and how they can connect it to their own lives (which you should always try to do when teaching any book).
