I read a lot of reviews as well as the the impressions on the back of the novel, which left a very good mark on my behalf. The novel unravels the mysteries revolving around life, death, and medicine. From the start, this book was intriguing. I learned a lot just from the simple introduction of this man's career and how he had dealt with several medical hardships. The book starts out with a man and his two sons that have schizophrenia and how no one really pays attention or cares about people with mental illness. I think this book really makes you think about what goes on outside of "your" world and how people are treated with mental illness. This also tells stories of real people with mental illness and what they have to go through in a normal day.

The book started off quickly but there were many descriptions that made the book easier to understand. It is written as an expose which I really enjoy because you really get to know the author. I liked how the author jumped right into the main ideas of the book. The main characters are often faced with a challenge that seems simple, but it is very complex. As they work to solve it, the author goes to great depths to describe the thought processes of the reseachers. I really like how descriptive and specific the writing is. I also like the casual attitude of the author towards the reader. It makes the information easy to understand and makes a connection with the reader.

The author described everything from every little detail in a characters eyes, to what the road looked like outside of her house. There were many characters introduced in the first chapter, but I had no problem figuring out who was who because of the descriptions the author gave. The plot was not really introduced for a while because the author kept giving descriptions of the scene and setting. She made sure we knew what everything looked like and who everyone was before she continued on in the book so the reader wouldn't get all of the characters mixed up .I've enjoyed reading this book because it really puts things into perspective. It talks of the unspeakable with screams coming from a girl trapped in her burned body and odd sexual comments. It's these things that make it pure and raw and it almost seems completely unbias. The way it's written is very simplistic, but also interwoven with slight insanity; looking at the mental institution as being a whole different world and the confusion, but acceptance of being there. My question is why is she the way she is... how did she end up that way? At this point, it is not really a story, which I was disappointed about, but it does give a new perspective on the position of the teachers in school systems. The book also depicts how high school students truly act and treat each other, which is cool to see from an observatory and scientific stand point.
