Portugal was rule by an essentially fascist (they labelled themselves corporatists) government called the Estado Novo regime which operated from 1932 to 1974. It came after a rather unstable stint of democracy before António Salazar became Portugal's prime minister and dictator in 1932.
The regime ended four years after Salazar's death. Though the regime increased Portugal's overall GDP, it still had Europe's lowest per capita income and the highest rates preventable deaths and infant mortality.
It's downfall was caused by the Carnation Revolution in Lisbon where Leftwing political members staged a military coup.
Portuguese fascism differs from others of the time in that the Estado Novo only had one wing of the government that could legally operate, the national union (União Nacional), and was not a party state, instead acting as an a political arm of the government and was not militant.

“When I look back, and it's been almost 25 years since I started performing at concerts, I have an inevitable feeling of emptiness. Thousands of good and bad things have happened. Basically, this path is difficult, tortuous, ungrateful many times, but I would not choose another one if I was offered a new opportunity. I am very happy to be a musician, and every day I try to be better, more truthful and less ignorant than the previous one. I am sorry that the country in which I live is like this ... I no longer know how to explain what is happening in this land. Mediocrity and impunity are gaining ground. We walk happily towards poverty, both economic and spiritual.” Pedro Joia
