Concept of a Single Note

Not unlike repetition, a single note can be played in succession in order to make a statement. A certain note that the composer believes creates a deeper meaning and may stand behind an instrumental or lyrical theme. In an excerpt from Ben Ratliff's book "Every Song Ever", Ben mentions a statement from Sonny Rollins that really made sense to me. "He said that if a musician can make one note, one sound, that he feels happy with, it's a good practice session" (72). To me it means that a single note or a single sound that you like can be the base of something very important. That a single note can have meaning and be the start of something beautiful. The most important thing is how you use that singe note.

Ben's Argument

From what I took from the reading Ratliff argues the importance of the single note. Not to be taken as this simple, meaningless note that someone uses out of carelessness or laziness, but out of sheer genius and with intention to take it further. To give this single note more power than most would understand. Like most of Ben Ratliff's arguments, I totally agree and understand his intention. The use of the single note can be applied in many forms, either to prove a point, make a command, or to better isolate other instruments.

I Wanna Be Sedated - The Ramones

Ben Ratliff uses this song as an example to talk about the use of the single note. Johnny Ramone's very simple guitar solo definitely has more meaning to it than most would think. The solo in itself goes along with the songs meaning about sedation. The administering of a sedative to cause calmness or sleep.

This song is heavy so future warning to the listeners out there. The guitar melody is basically 3 different notes played very fast. It is simple but also complicated and very beautiful. I think it also helps the listener focus more on the other aspects to the song like the exceptional drums and vocals/lyrics.

An instrumental song by one of the most talented/famous Progressive classic rock bands, Rush. This song is very unique because of they way it was written and performed. The letters YYZ represent a Morse code signal used by Toronto's Lester B. Pearson International Airport. They used the Morse code as a rhythm throughout the song.
