In the poem, the voice is very masculine and condescending. He says, "How many times do I have to tell you". It is interpreted as though he is talking to her as a small child. He even calls her a "small irritating thing". This is very significant for the story's inside parts. As human, we sometimes get irritated because we get obsessed with something that we cannot have. This is what happens in this story. First of all, "the world" obviously means the Earth as it is referring to the end of the planet. However, after dissecting the poem, it is clear that "the world" could also mean humanity. This is made evident through the poem's heavy discussion of human emotion.
