Mildred and her continous addiction

Within the book, the character Mildred has an addiction to overdosing on sleeping pills. She gradually takes the pills to take away the pain and stress as a symbol of struggling, so she sleeps it away. As a straightforward example, “The small crystal bottle of sleeping tablets which earlier today had been filled with thirty capsules and which now lay uncapped and empty in the light of the tiny flare” (Bradbury 11). This clearly shows the overdosing, and the addiction that's involved with overdosing. Mildred was suffering from her own problems, just like all of the others in society. Although, the way she chose to deal with them grabbed people's attention and grew sorrow for her. Another example being, “The capsules! How many will you take later and not know?” (Bradbury 41). This symbolizes forgetfulness because of the mental issues she is going through, more than likely brainwashes her on a daily basis. The concerning side of Montag asking her this question would later foreshadow her addiction further in the story. Mildred then blacked out as a result of an attempted suicide. After Mildred's incident, Montag never is around to notice whether she stops or not. Montag claims he would never cry if anything happened to her, giving clues that Mildred anticipated to keep overdosing.

The Urge to Burn

The book title, Fahrenheit 451, refers to the degrees at which books burn. The characters are all fascinated with the spark of a fire. The urge to burn books and light things on fire show signs of a pyromaniac disorder. Within the topic of mental illness, a way to deal with it is to find something satisfying. As evidence, “I've got an awful feeling I want to smash things and kill things” (Bradbury 61). This quote explains how its uncontrollable and addicting. As the story goes on, the characters are secretive and cautious about each fire that happens. The characters are so attached to the sense of fire, causing them to go off on a splurge. This could also be some sort of addiction, “ Quick with the kerosene. Who's got a match?” (Bradbury 34). This command shows how serious their desires are. Also, later the kerosene never fully came of, symbolizing guilt. This symbol goes throughout the book while being hidden to the readers. Everything their society requires is later regretted secretly.

Anaylsis of Emotions

The emotions of all the characters lead to some category of depression. Due to all of these illnesses, they can force people to react differently than others. As Montag said, “ So I've lots of time for crazy thoughts, I guess” (Bradbury 7). This shows how empty he is,leaving him a lot of time for overthinking. When Montag enters his house and sees Mildred close to her death is how Montag’s depression visibly grew. Montag doesn't show much emotion or at least let everyone know it. The way he mostly copes with his negative emotions is to let his mind roam. As as example, “His inner mind, reaching out to turn the corner for him, had heard the faintest whisper.” (Bradbury 3). This is showing how he hears voices reaching out to him. No one in that society seems to care about each others emotions. As Montag said,” It's been a long time since anyone cared enough to ask. A good question.” (Bradbury 26). This is a perfect example of how their society runs.

Since addiction is so common in today's society, people are having more difficulty dealing with this illness. With their mental struggles pushing them off the edge and mostly giving up. According to Foundations Recovery Network, “many depressed individuals reach for drugs or alcohol as a way to lift their spirits or to numb painful thoughts. As a result, depression and substance abuse feed into each other, and one condition will often make the other worse.” This piece of information refers to Mildred and her negative effort to cut her addiction. As just said, the substance abuse it used to enter a more relaxed relm. The misuse of drugs and alcohol leads to an unsuccessful happy and healthy lifestyle. As stated in the book, Mental Illness, Gilda Berger writes, “Although almost 10 million people in the United States admit to have problems related to alcohol, only 1 million recieve treatment for alcoholism.” (Berger 55). This relates exactly towards Mildred, knowing that she never received help. In agreement with fact number 9 relating to MIldred. Fact number 9 states, “ Many people struggling with substance abuse require long-term and/ or repeated treatment” (Partnership For Drug-Free Kids). This explains why Mildred had such a hard time neutralizing.

The book, Fahrenheit 451 is based on all about fire. All the characters have some type of connection with the flame of a fire. Whether that be to start a fire, to watch something burn, a fear of fire, or even an obsession with the sparks. As stated, "Feeling pleasure, relief or gratification when setting fires or when seeing the damage causes by and aftermath of the fire" (Pyromania). As this condition is an obvious one throughout the story, it is very rare. In all the research much is unexplained about this impulse-control disorders causes. Although, as said, “ For most, pyromania starts in childhood or adolescence, and can carry on into adulthood if not treated properly. For some, setting fires may be an attempt to gain attention, while for others it may just be general anti-social behavior.” (GoMentor). The issues involved with this disorder come from some type of depression. Mostly, when people's emotions are flowing is when they are more prone to do something to crave attention. They feel empty and lonely, so could take as far as committing a crime (audiopedia). Related to pyromania disorders are forms of bipolar disorders and even substance abuse. While the brain causes emotions and the substances causes the actions are the formula as a case just like this one.

As the author predicts the future, mental health has become a big struggle in today's society. To tie all of this together is the broad spectrum of emotions. "A mental illness is a disease that causes mild to severe disturbances in thought and/or behavior, resulting in an inability to cope with life’s ordinary demands and routines." (Mental)Depression has become more common in teens in society. As Lisa Rapaport studied, “ For youth ages 12 to 17, the prevalence of depression increased from 8.7 percent in 2005 to 11.3 percent in 2014, the study found. Among adults aged 18 to 25, the prevalence climbed from 8.8 percent to 9.6 percent during the study period.” (Business Insider). This shows the rapid increase in this mental illness. This also shows how Montag and Mildred are a part of this increase. A common stage during this is hibernation.(healthcentral). Isolating away from others and avoiding social contact is definitely a noticed behavior change. All mental illnesses are referred to in this book. Substance abuse, mental illnesses, and the outcome actions are relate to the universal theme to the book, Fahrenheit 451.
