The theme alienation is explored in the story through the main character Harold Krebs. Krebs is returning to his hometown in Oklahoma after having fought in WW1, where he was deployed in both France and Germany. He feels isolated both from his family and society as he isn’t capable of speaking about his experiences during the war and seems to be out of touch with his social environment. Furthermore, he feels disconnected from his family as he doesn’t believe in God no more, and he has lost his determination. The ending shows how Krebs is different to his mother and family. His mother wants him to pray, but Harold refuses and wants his mother to do it for him. His mother talks to Harold like he is a little child. “Do you want me to pray for you”. It seems like Harold is afraid to take the responsibility for the pray and is afraid to fail. Harold has tried to keep his life from being complicated. He goes to the schoolyard to watch Helen play baseball because it is simple and a smoothly rutine that would her happy. Harold wants his life to go smoothly. He is avoiding conversations with his father and he wants to make his mother happy by getting a job in Kansas City.

Krebs tried very hard to keep his life simple, but his parents getting worried makes it so much more complicated. Therefore, he lies to his mother. "He had tried so to keep his life from being complicated".
He goes over to watch Helen play baseball because it is so simple and  without consequences.
To make his mother happy he will go to Kansas City to get a job, and then soon afterwards he will leave home as there is nothing good for him there, at least in his eyes. The ending shows how he really wants to try and make his mother happy about what he is doing with his life. In the end Krebs does not want to pray, which shows that he is an atheist and does not want to be a part of God's kingdom. His mother is the opposite where she believes in God, which is also why she is the one praying instead of Krebs. Krebs also feels sorry for his mother and he seems to try and make her happy again by getting a job in kansas city. Most of the themes of the story connect to the ways Krebs copes after the war. He feels there is a distance between him and the world he is living in now compered to the life he had doing I war. He feels alienated. Doing the war he had a clear purpose. Another theme of the story is lack of direction and purpose. Returning from the war the norm of the society has expectations. Soldier’s Home is a short story about returning home after participating in World War I. The short story portrays the struggles a veteran is facing when he is returning to his old life. This makes emotions, relationships and feelings some of the themes in the short story. The emotions and feelings of a veteran is among others seen in this quotation: “Krebs felt embarrassed and resentful as always.” In this quotation Krebs feelings are described unmistakable.

Krebs wants to keep his life from being complicated, but with his parents being worried about his future, things are not going smoothly, according to Krebs himself. He has now felt sorry for his mother and lied to her as well. All of this is a bit too much for Krebs to handle. He therefore decides to leave his home so he can start a new life, along with making his mother less worried by getting a job.
"He would go to Kansas City and get a job and she would feel all right about it" (p.32) 
He wants to avoid emotional situations with both his mother and father, implying that he does not really care for his parents. However, when it comes to his sister, he chooses to watch Helen play indoor baseball, indicating that she is more simple than other people. Harold Krebs returns to his home after the war. He feels that he is too late, and people have already heard about all the great stories about the war. In the beginning, he does not want to talk about the war, but later he wants people to ask and listen to how he feels. He seems emotionally disconnected even from his own mom "Yes. Don't you love your mother, dear boy?/No, Krebs said." 
The themes war and alienation is explored in the story.  

Krebs' family is a patriarchal family where the father is the one who is in charge. The mother prays in the end of the story. There are also sudden expectations like getting a family (settling down) and a job. 
Therefore, the themes are family, gender roles and traditions.
