Post what you learned:

Fatima Riyadh - I learned that meiosis is a process where a single cell divides twice to produce four cells containing half the original amount of genetic information. Therefore the purpose of meiosis is to produce gametes, the sperm and eggs, with half of the genetic complement of the parent cells. It results in a variety of genetics and it is important because it ensures that all organisms produced via sexual reproduction contain the correct number of chromosomes. Overall, this lesson strengthened my understanding and recognition of how intricate and organized cell processes are to keep our bodies healthy.

Post what you learned: I learned that humans have 46 chromosomes and that body cells are diploid while sex cells are haploid. Meiosis is different from mitosis in such that they happen in sex cells and split two times after replicating the right amount of DNA. I learned that
Prophase 1 = chromosomes condense, centrioles move to the poles, spindle fibers appear, and cross over the genes

Metaphase 1 = homologous chromosomes align along the equator in pairs; random orientation occurs

Anaphase 1= chromosomes are not torn apart but instead pulled as a whole

Telophase 1= chromosomes prepare for meiosis II as they may not decondense and nuclear structures may not reappear

Meiosis II is technically mitosis but all 4 haploid cells end up with a genetically unique material

as for the chiasmata specifically, With the help of synaptonemal complexes, chiasmata are formed in which an “x” is shaped by both chromosomes where genetic exchange takes place. It sets the stage for the new chromosomes with derived parts. This means genetic exchange is achieved.

I also learned that through the homologous chromosomes and the fact they are not bound to a certain formation, many possibilities and variations can be achieved. As for crossing over, it created countless mixtures as genes could be passed down from the uncle, mother, father, paternal and maternal grandparents. For random orientation, the line-up of the homologous chromosomes can take up any line-up and that alone would result in 8 million different possibilities.

During prophase I, the four sister chromatids of a pair of homologous chromosomes become securely linked. The DNA molecule of one of the chromatids is sliced. Following that, another cut is made in the DNA molecule of a non-sister chromatid. The DNA of one chromatid connects to the DNA of the non-sister chromatid. After then, the genetic material may be transferred between the paternal and maternal chromosomes. This is known as crossing over. The homologous chromosomes are no longer intimately linked after crossing over, but the connection between the non-sister chromatids remains, resulting in an X-shaped structure known as a chiasma. The chiasma is a link between homologous chromosomal pairs that lasts until late metaphase I.

I learnt a lot in this lesson, including the fact that meiosis is the process through which haploid gametes are produced. Meiosis is a form of cell division that reduces the number of chromosomes by half. Meiosis occurs only in gamete-producing cells in the gonads. Meiosis begins with a diploid cell and culminates in four haploid cells. These cells will eventually grow into mature sperm or egg cells. During meiosis, homologous chromosomes split, resulting in the formation of haploid cells with just one chromosome from each pair. During meiosis, two cell divisions occur: meiosis I and meiosis II.

I learned that the typical behavior of chromosomes in meiosis is that homologous pairs synapse, recombine, and then separate at anaphase I. At anaphase II, sister chromatids separate. In contrast to mitosis, the sister chromatids of each homolog remain attached to each other. At meiosis II the sisters now separate to opposite poles. also meiosis is the type of cell division that produces gametes. Meiosis involves two cell divisions and producers four haploid cells. I also learned that sexual reproduction has the potential to produce tremendous genetic variation in offspring. This is due in part to crossing over during mitosis.

Meiosis is a sort of cell division that creates gametes, as I learnt. Meiosis is a two-cell division process that results in four haploid cells. I also discovered that sexual reproduction has the ability to generate a lot of genetic diversity in children. Crossing over during mitosis is one of the reasons for this.

Abdelrahman El Sayed Meiosis is a unique sort of cell division of microorganism cells in physically repeating organic entities used to create the gametes, for example, sperm or egg cells. It includes two rounds of division that eventually bring about four cells with just one duplicate of every chromosome.

I learned that meiosis is the type of cell division that produces gametes. This process involves two cell divisions and produces four haploid cells. The sexual reproduction has the potential to produce tremendous genetic variation in offspring. This is due in part to crossing over during meiosis. I also learned that homologous chromosomes exchange segments of DNA. This is known as crossing over, and is unique to meiosis. During prophase 1 the four sister chromatids of a pair of homologous chromosomes become tightly linked in a process called synapsis.

I learned that Meiosis is a process where a single cell divides twice to produce four cells containing half the original amount of genetic information. Meiosis, also called reduction division, division of a germ cell involving two fissions of the nucleus and giving rise to four gametes, or sex cells, each possessing half the number of chromosomes of the original cell. I also learned the difference from meiosis and mitosis, Cells divide and reproduce in two ways, mitosis and meiosis. Mitosis results in two identical daughter cells, whereas meiosis results in four sex cells.
