Causes of the Revolution

Because of how unhappy the colonists were, they chose to revolt. Some of the resins why they revolted are listed above, such as little religious tolerance and no self government.

Nationality

All though they lived in a separate continent and did not like how they were treated by England, they were still considered British because they were under the King's rule.

Ignoring English Law

The English passed many laws regarding the colonies, but very few of them were ever actually enforced. Because of this, the colonists learned to work around the laws, and therefore felt like they didn't have to pay attention to them at all. This this is one of the ways the colonists got a small sense of freedom, which later lead to the American Revolution.

When the pilgrims left England they were headed for Virginia. But because they got thrown off course, they ended up in Plymouth. Since there wasn't anyone there to rule them they decided they would rule themselves. When they signed the Mayflower Compact they were setting up laws for their new area. They later, however, became a royal colony. But the pilgrims still had an idea what democracy felt like, and they did not like giving it up.

Religious Toleration

Most of the colonists were people fleeing religious persecution in England. Because of this, when they got to America they wanted religious freedom, which they got. Along with this they wanted more freedoms.

Small Self Government

Although there were British governors in colonial America, they did not act as complete rulers. Because of this many colonies formed their own small governments, the first being the Virginia House of Burgesses. Many other colonies followed in their footsteps and formed their own small legislatures. This lead to the colonists getting a sense of democracy, which was another contributor to the American Revolution.
