By, Aisley Altobell

1. What happened between Father and Black Dog, and what was the end result?

1. Since Black Dog was hurting Moon Shadow, which was Windrider's son, he finally had enough of Black Dog. Though, it was shown they never got along anyway, as said by Tiger General on page 114. Father ended up going to the place where Black Dog was staying, (at the Sleepers,) with Moon Shadow following behind Father secretly. Father fought Black Dog with a hatchet, while Black Dog fought Father with a sword. With Moon Shadow's help in taking out a man who was trying to shoot at father out of the fight, and with Father's finishing blow in the back after possibly fatally wounding Black Dog in the chest, the fight was over. Tiger General, who watched the fight take place, warned them that though he did not care about the two fools, some people would resent the death of a brother, no matter what kind of a fool that he was, and for the sake of safety, should probably get out of town for a while. Father decides that Moon Shadow and he shall go to live among the demons at a demonnesses' house that will probably let them stay, and work for the demon Mister Alger, who manages apartment houses. Father could clean and fix things in the house. In conclusion, the end result is that Black Dog is injured, possibly fatally, and since in the fight Father ended up killing another brother who was trying to shoot him with a gun, they must now move away from the Tang's people town to live with the demons, as many people may have a vengeance against father killing one of the brothers.

2. Explain the effect of killing on the lives of Moon Shadow and his Father.

2. The effect that killing had on the lives of Moon Shadow and Father, is that now that they have killed one of the brothers, many other people may have a vengeance on Moon Shadow and Father now. Some people could even end up trying to kill them, or steal from them, so they must move away from the Tang's people's town, for at least long enough for people to simmer down. This means they must move into the land of the demons, which may be less dangerous for Moon Shadow and Father.

3. Why is the chapter called "Windrider's Claws"?

3. The chapter is called "Windrider's Claws", because we already know that Windrider already believes he will be a dragon one day, and had a dream about dragons. But it is called Windrider's Claws because it is a bring back to comparing Windrider as a dragon, and just like Windrider says on page 110, "dragons have claws too." This chapter is also mainly about protecting Moon Shadow from Black Dog, and Father having enough of Black Dog. Moon Shadow is also worried about Windrider being reborn as a dragon if Windrider acts like a criminal, and Father brings up the point that dragons were given claws to protect themselves and others. This goes back to the title because Windrider uses his claws, to protect Moon Shadow, hence the name Windrider's claws. (Plus, the name sounds awesome!)

How are they different

1. Moonshadow is telling Miss Whitlaw about demons and dragons. Moonshadow says that they are great creatures and that some can bring good benefits as well as very unpleasant ones. He also taught miss Whitlaw that you don't put sugar and cream in your tea.
2. Moonshadow was writing to the Wrights because he wanted them to help his father learn and make a machine that would make him fly. The result of it was getting a letter back to weeks later from Orville Wright and some diagrams. When his father saw the letter he got very angry and crumpled it up and threw it, because he thought that he had told Ms. Whitlaw about his dream.
3. One trait that Moonshadow, Windrider, and Miss Whitlaw all have in common is that they are all afraid. Moonshadow and Windrider are afraid of the evil demons and Miss Whitlaw is afraid of the evil dragons. One belief that Moonshadow, Windrider, and Miss Whitlaw have differently is that Moonshadow and Windrider both think that the dragons are good. Miss Whitlaw thinks that the dragons are horrific creatures that bring terror to her people.

The superior man helps others even when he himself is in danger, therefore sharing his wealth or good fortune.

2. To where did the people of the Tang move, and why?

The people of Tang moved to any places, starting at Van Ness Avenue, then a parade ground near the entrance to the bay, then a golf course at Presidio, another army base to the east of the Golden Gate, then back to the parade ground where they finally won the same rights to rebuild on their old sites just like the white demons.

3. What is the bad thing that balances the good thing (the Company's friendship with Miss Whitlaw)?

Afterword:

1. What do you learn about Lawrence Yep's reasons for writing Dragonwings?

2. Why do you think the author chose to have Moon Shadow tell the story?

3. Was there anything unexpected in the story?

1. One of the reasons was that they wanted to was to "counter various stereotypes as presented in the media ... not as they really are but as they exist in the mind of White America." (As seen on page 317)They also wanted to show that Chinese Americans are human beings on which America has had a unique effect upon.

2.The author chose to have the fictional character "Moon Shadow" tell the story as they wanted to show how America has had a unique effect on Chinese Americans, and found no better way to tell the story than from the eyes of a recently arrived Chinese boy, and by showing the struggles of his father in following his dream, to show how hard it was for the Chinese Americans in that specific place and time period.

3. There were many unexpected things such as the earthquake and the crash of the plane, but personally, in my opinion, the biggest upset was the return of Black Dog, a vicious side character that seemed most probably dead, and was let the memory of die away until the surprising pop out back in the very end of the book on chapter eleven. It was a shock, I believe, to find that the character the reader had thrown to the side, had come back for his final vengeance.
