Learning menus are a great way to incorporate student choice and to differentiate learning. With digital tools, it’s easy to make menus interactive, digital, and more dynamic! Digital Differentiation offers teachers and students many ways to reach all learners.

What are digital learning menus?

IT’S ALL ABOUT CHOICE! With the use of IPADs, learning menus (aka choice boards) are a great form of differentiating learning that gives students a menu or choice of learning activities. Digital learning menus can be used in any grade/content area.

Creating a Tic-Tac-Toe Learning Menu in Google Docs:

One easy way to try out implementing a learning menu using the IPADs is a digital "Tic-Tac-Toe" menu. A digital "Tic-Tac-Toe" can be used for anything from short activities to more long-term projects, both assessment FOR learning (formative) and assessment OF learning (summative).

Remember when you are creating a learning menu to align it with your learning objective! First, you want to make sure the middle square is a non-negotiable, the one activity that you want every student to complete. This could be reading an article, watching a video, add a summary it to a collaborative Google Slide deck where they will also add links to their other projects. Everything in one place!

Color coding on the "Tic-Tac-Toe" menu helps students to guide their learning. Because the middle square is a non-negotiable, you control how they navigate and complete activities on the menu. Every student will do the middle square and one from the blue and one from the yellow.

See example Novel Study Tic-Tac-Toe choice Menu (There is a link on the template to make a blank copy)

We recently introduced Kodable as our new coding platform. Like code.org and codemonkey, we are teaching coding starting from Kindergarten to grade 8th. Kodable is a great website and app we use with our lower grade students. It gives them a more visual step-by-step process of how coding is. Using arrows, students are able to determine how to trasnport an object from one end to another using left, right,up, or down directions.
