- Youth worker advocates for the person when s/he is not capable for doing it due to stress or anxiety. It might be that the issue is a bit complex and the youth worker can handle the information better.
- Refer the young person to an advocacy special service when the issue is too complex for a youth worker and might be legal implications that require legal assistance. 
- Self-advocacy is better for when the issue is not too complex, the young person only needs some encouragement and is capable at dealing with the process on her/his own. This type of intervention reinforces self-esteem, confidence and helps the person to learn skills for similar situations in the future.
