By Diego (EOI Coruña).
When I was 18, I was passionate about politics, values, fighting for a just cause. A friend gave me a book, "the Story of a Shipwrecked Sailor ", which was written by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. The story of this adventure was serialized in The Spectator of Bogota. On February 28, 1955, the news was that eight members of the crew of a destroyer Navy Colombia had fallen into the water and disappeared because of a storm in the Caribbean Sea. Of the eight people, only Luis Alejandro Velasco survived and he spent ten days adrift on a raft without food or drink ... It is therefore a journalistic reconstruction of the event as the castaway's told the young reporter Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

However, I haven´t read it until now. The plot is about one man who likes running, but he gets injured a lot of times. In spite of stopping or playing another sport, he starts to look for information about the reasons why he´s injurying himself continuously. By the way, he´s going to tell stories about different athletes. It caught my attention because now running is in fashion and I thought that this book could be a guide about new runners.I was wrong and the book is worth reading.

By Marco Battista
Animal Farm is a satirical novel, written with a double purpose: entertaining and educating about politics. The plot that takes place in a farm is indeed a representation of the Russian revolution. The animals living in Jhon's farm (the name of the farmer) decide to rebel against the humans that exploit them. A new order made of a general assembly of all the animals starts taking care of the farm, but a greedy pig called Napoleon takes over the lead with a coup d'etat. A dictatorship is extablished as what happened with Stalin in the Soviet Union.
I really like this book for his deepness and for the way it deals with political issues, making them more approachable for everyone.

A few weeks ago I bought an e-book reader. In the tablet was already downloaded 1984 by George Orwell, a book that I read with great enthusiasm. 1984 is a thought-provoking novel published in 1949. The novel is set in the year 1984 when most of the world population have become victims of perpetual war, omnipresent government surveillance and propaganda.

In the novel, Great Britain has become a province of a superstate named Oceania. Oceania is ruled by the "Party". The Party's leader is Big Brother, who controls every aspect of people’s lives. It has invented the language ‘Newspeak’ in an attempt to completely eliminate political rebellion; created ‘Throughtcrimes’ to stop people even thinking of things considered rebellious. The party controls what people read, speak, say and do with the threat that if they disobey, they will be sent to the dreaded Room 101 as a looming punishment.

The protagonist, Winston Smith, begins a rebellion against the party by keeping a diary of his secret thoughts, which is a deadly thoughtcrime. With his lover Julia, he begins a fight for freedom and justice, in a world where no one else appears to see, or dislike, the oppression the protagonist opposes.

In my opinion the most powerful, effective and frightening notion of 1984 is that the complete control of an entire nation under a totalitarian state is perfectly possible. It makes you wonder about different themes. At the beginning of the book, these words are presented as the official motto of the nation of Oceania:

War is Peace

Freedom is Slavery

Ignorance is Strength

War allows states to keep the population poor and ignorant, so under their control.

I think everyone should read this best-seller for its topic, but also because is gripping and brilliant.

The plot is about a man without certainties and without vocations, believed dead after an escape from home and thinks of changing his life, taking the name of Adriano Meis. But the desire for the reconquest of the original purity and authenticity fails and then stages Adriano's suicide and makes Mattia "rise again". But he is condemned to remain a stranger to the world because things have changed on his return. I recommend reading this great work because it is interesting to see how man, in order to improve his life, tends to make it worse and especially to read this aspect under the Pirandello humorous touch.
- Gloria Conte

The author talks about the changes in Naples and all of Italy in 50 years. The story is set in a poor neighborhood of Naples where the two friends grow together. Girls grow up, love each other, change, observe and envy each other. I love this book because their friendship is unique and enviable. Moreover, the simple and luminous writing is pleasant, but not trivial. I recommend to everyone reading this book but in particular to the girls who will love it like me.

INSIDE THE WORLD’S TOUGHEST PRISONS

Inside the world’s toughest prisons is a documentary book written by Paul Connolly, an Irish investigative journalist. The book is divided into 12 chapters, each one dealing with a different prison in the world. The plot of this book is compelling, full of twists and sometimes even thrilling. The protagonist is Paul Connolly himself. He pretends to be a prisoner for a week and visits all the prisons in the world to see the reality of them and the life that the prisoners lead in there, often running into complicated and difficult situations. I really liked this book and I suggest you read it because it really made me understand the importance of living in brotherhood with others, respecting them and above all respecting the law. I won't tell you anything else. It is up to you to read the book.

By Matteo Pascali

Reunion by Fred Uhlman

Reunion is a novella written by Fred Uhlman. Uhlman not only was a good writer, but a good painter too and in his writing style the reader is able to enjoy his ability to condense this magnificent story of friendship within the limits of the novella, as a painter adapts reality and condenses it on a canvas. The german author was a victim of the Nazi regime, being jewish, as the main character of the book, Hans Schwarz. The plot is about the unexpected friendship between Hans and Konradin von Hoenfels, a boy member of an old and very well known aristocratic family. The two boys apparently so different end up discovering to be made for each other, sharing passions and hobbies. The story takes place 7 years before the start of World War II, during the rise of Nazism. In this period the young jew attends to the conversion of all the members of his class to the new doctrine. It's just a matter of time before he discovers that Konradin's family hate jews and that they don't want them to be friends or to be seen in public together. After a very hard time for them both, the requirements of Konradin's social status tear their friendship apart. Eventually Konradin joins the Nazis and Hans escapes in the Usa. There is however a totally unexpected and moving reunion, in the very end...
The book deals with the atrocities of World War II in a very delicate and profound way, analyzing the life of a teenager and the consequences that Nazism entailed. The autobiographical references to the author's life enhance the very realistic nature of the story, always pointing towards emotions, that are literally everything that matter in the book. I highly recommend this reading to anyone, since it's so easy, touching and deals with our civilization's most heinous tragedy in a simple, malinconic but sweet way.

by Francesco

Se lo describe como negativo y estricto en términos de reglas. Recomiendo el libro porque es muy emotivo. Pero también tiene momentos divertidos.
