The day before George gave Lennie strict instructions to not talk to the boss because he doesn't want him to know how stupid he is. After getting settled in there bunks the boss walks in and goes off at them for being late George doesn't like that then he starts to question there ability to work. Lennie forgets the rule about not speaking, George becomes visibly nervous. George tells the boss that Lennie is his cousin and was kicked in the head by a horse when he when he was young, so George has to look out for him. Once the boss leaves George scolds Lennie for speaking up. Later that day they meet Candy. They were born in the same town, and George took charge of Lennie after the death of Lennie’s Aunt Clara. At first, George admits, he pushed Lennie around, getting him to do ridiculous things, George felt ashamed of his behavior.
