         <description><![CDATA[<p>1. What is a storm surge?&nbsp;A righsing of the sea&nbsp;as a result of wind and atmospheric pressure.</p><p>Storm surge is an abnormal rise of water generated by a storm, over and above the predicted&nbsp;enormous tide.</p><p>2. How do cyclonic winds, torrential rains and storm surge affect people in low lying coastal areas? <strong>Tropical Cyclones</strong> are low pressure systems that form over warm tropical waters and have gale force winds (sustained winds of 63 km/h or greater and gusts in excess of 90 km/h) near the centre</p><p>Storm surge is one of the main causes of coastal inundation.<br>Coastal inundation is the flooding of normally dry, low-lying coastal land,mainly caused by severe weather events along the coastal rivers. Torrential rain can cause flooding</p><p>3. Look at Figure 3 - Why is a storm surge a problem for many coastal areas that get hit by tropical cyclones? </p><p>Because coastal regions that were hit by cyclones would cause even more devastation and destruction if hit by a storm surge.</p><p>4. Find a diagram of a tropical cyclone. Label this diagram and understand how it works so that you can explain it to the class.  </p>]]></description>

How big was Cyclone Yasi and how far did it move inland?</p><p>Ans: 400 km wide 30 km diameter, traveled 900 km inland.</p><p><span style="font-size: 13px;">3. Explain what the conditions would have been like during Cyclone Yasi. Would they have been different if it took place at&nbsp;a different time of day?

         <description><![CDATA[<p>1. What are tornadoes?<b> Tornadoes are violent, wildly spinning columns of air.</b></p><p>2. Where do tornadoes come from? <b>Tornadoes come from under a cumulonimbus cloud and make contact with the ground.</b></p><p>3. Draw a diagram of a tornado. Place&nbsp;the following labels on it - rotating funnel, supercell, thundercloud and updraft winds (Figure 1 in Jac Plus might help). Be ready to describe the diagram to the class.</p><p>4. What is the Fujita scale (Table 1)? What is the difference between and E1 and E5 tornado? <b>The fujita scale is how tornadoes are ranked, the difference between E1 and E5 tornado is that the E1 is moderate and E5 is incredible.</b></p>]]></description>
