Claudette Colvin was just a person living under the Jim Crow Laws. Claudette's view on the Jim Crow Laws changed dramatically when Jeremiah Reeve's was arrested and later killed after he confessed to raping a white woman. Claudette thought this was unfair that when a whites raped blacks, which happened commonly, didn't get the death sentence. She eventually took a stand on a Montgomery bus when a white told her and her friends to up their seats, her friends moved, but Claudette didn't . Claudette was later arrested by Montgomery city police, she was bailed out by her mother and pastor later in the day.

She witnessed an innocent high school student be put on death row and she advocated for his freedom. She also receives a new teacher who teaches her that her life and the lives of all blacks mean something. She raises money for the the high school boy's lawyers and she learns more and more about the rich history of black people and she learns her rights. This changes her into a knowledgeable young woman who advocates for black people's rights in a time when black people were treated terribly. This is Claudette's transformation.

Claudette Colvin's example of not willing to giving up here seat on the bus for a white woman and going to jail made the blacks in her neighborhood proud of her, they stayed up that night to protect her from any whites that tried to come to harm/kill her. At that time in the south if blacks were to stand up to whites or refused to do something the they would be punished, almost always by death (lynching). She was trying to change the rules of injustice for blacks throughout all of Montgomery, Alabama and help to make blacks and whites equal. After a debate, with of vote 9-0 , whites and blacks were allowed into the same school. Blacks and whites were slowly starting to become equal and some whites didn't like that.

All of this injustice transformed Claudette into someone who wanted to fight for the rights that blacks had but were denied of getting. One of the main reasons for this change in Claudette was when Jeremiah Reeves was punished unfairly. Miss Nesbitt taught Claudette that black's had all the same rights as white's they just were not treated fairly. Her transformation soon turned into a protest on the bus that got her arrested but, it made the black community proud that she was taking a stand for black peoples rights.

Claudette´s class mate Jeremiah Reeves
was arrested and charged with rape on a white housewife. Jeremiah Reeves confessed to the crime. Police quickly expanded the charges and claimed he was responsible for raping six other white women. Jeremiah was sentenced by the jury to death . Blacks where outraged including Claudette. She stated"Jeremiah's arrest was the turning point of my life .Once Jeremiah died Claudette became more invested in the civil rights movement. The hypocrisy of it made Claudette very angry as stated on pg 25. From here on out Claudette thought about civil rights differently. Claudette was still Furious about Jeremiah Reeves plight when on the first day of her sophomore year she met someone who gave her the confidence to transform her anger into action.this was the start to her so called transformation.

Claudette was only four years old when she first experienced with injustice. This lead her to hate segregation and discrimination. When she was only 13 her little sister Delphine died from the illness polio. This made her want to fight more, fight for her sisters rights. When she was 15, her and her schoolmates were riding the city bus home from school when she experienced another terrible act of injustice. A white lady had boarded the bus demanding a seat. Sadly, Claudette and her four classmates were all forced to get up for that one white woman to sit down, because a white person did not want to sit in the same row as a black, because most whites thought that they were better then blacks just based on their skin color. Once Claudette refused to give her seat up to a white woman, the bus driver demanded her to get up from the front. Claudette still refused, which made the driver furious. He started screaming harsh rude things to Claudette, the driver then went to the next bus stop to get two white cops who eventually arrested her(Claudette). She was the first black woman or black person to plead not guilty. This was her experiences with injustice that lead to her transformation.
