Like most non-fiction books, Stuff Matters begins with an introduction. However, unlike most books, rather than being bland and uninteresting, the introduction begins with young Mark Miodownik at a train station in London, where he gets stabbed by a homeless man with a razor blade for not giving him any of his non existent money. He begins to think, the razor was made of steel, staples are steel, cars are steel, and so on. He becomes obsessed with materials and how they behave. He is currently a professor of materials at the University College of London.

Stuff Matters vividly demonstrates long and rich history of one of the most basic substances in engineering-steel. For example, did you know the Japanese used to make steel for samurai swords by layering black, iron-rich sands and coal together in a furnace, igniting it, and constantly maintaining the fire for two weeks?
