When he and Finny got let off the hook after being scolded for skipping lunch, he discussed how, had Finny not been so charismatic and friendly with all the teachers, they would have gotten in trouble. Another time when Gene and Finny went to a dinner with Mr. and Mrs. Patch-Withers, and Finny expressed his thoughts on the politics that were going on at the time while also wearing the Devon School tie as a belt, the Headmaster would normally have called any other student out for the disrespect he was showing. Gene noted that headmaster and his wife went along with Finny's expressive personality. Then, while walking through the campus, Finny talks Gene into jumping with him out of the tree.
