Due to increasing debt and damage caused in Puerto Rico, many people have been forced to move on to the mainland. The top 3 states of Puerto Rican hubs are New York, New Jersey, and Florida according to the Census Bureau. Puerto Rico had more poverty and unemployment meanwhile having less labor participation and less median income as of 2015. These numbers have only been exaggerated from the hurricanes and Covid-19 which led the people to travel onto the mainland. (Cordeo-Guzman)

In 2011, unemployment was 17% in Puerto Rico. These numbers were the first signs of the economic crisis. Today, this number fluctuates though 6.0%-8.5% though is followed by 45.1% poverty. These unemployment numbers are lowering though it is because construction jobs are increasing dramatically due to the damage caused by hurricanes. This is also followed by the fact that taxes are increasing, so jobs are becoming more open though poverty is increasing due to increased prices and fewer homes. (Cordeo-Guzman)

Puerto Rico is under the sovereignty of the United States however, if it were to become a state it would have to abide by the United States government. Also if Puerto Rico were to become a state the votes would most likely lean towards Democratic voting based on predictions of Puerto Rico voting patterns. Despite this, both Democrats and Republicans in American government before have voted for Puerto Rican statehood before. ("Federal Response To Puerto Rico...)

Puerto Rico considered a reform to its economy due to the economic crisis. Some ideas to help Puerto Rico are giving Puerto Rico the right to declare Chapter 9 Bankruptcy, this essentially would allow Puerto Rico establish a fair repayment plan. Some presidents have tried for their own relief plans to help Puerto Rico. Some presidents either have directly tried to give a relief plan or use current systems from their administrations to help Puerto Rico. Reducing the fee for healthcare in these territories would also help a ton since healthcare is guilty for the highest portion of debt in Puerto Rico as of 2015. (Cordeo-Guzman)

In 2011, a Republican Governor, Fortuno, of Puerto Rico had met with President Barack Obama of the United States to address unemployment and certain tensions. President Obama and Fortuno had some tension because of the difference of political parties and political beliefs. Fortuno started to have other tensions with Republicans in Congress as well (PUERTO RICO TACKLES UNEMPLOYMENT...). More recently though, after Hurricane Maria of 2017, there was the infamous visit of President Trump to assess the damage in Puerto Rico. Trump planned a relief plan for Puerto Rico in aid for about $13 Billion dollars, however when Biden had a visit to Puerto Rico after Hurricane Fiona, he stated that Trump's aid and assessment was downplayed. Despite the assessments, Trump's aid never was received or processed as Trump left office (In The Aftermath Of Hurricane...). Biden has promised some sort of aid in the infrastructure bill he passed, however it is questioned if he will directly pass anything for Puerto Rico. (Biden visits Puerto Rico to assess...)

As of 2015, the economic crisis has Puerto Rico in debt of an unpayable $72 Billion in debt. Because of the high debt, taxes were increased from 7% to 11% with heftier pensions. Though most of the debt is estimated to come from healthcare which was an estimated $25 Billion. As of 2018, the debt is still reportedly to be at $70 Billion meanwhile Puerto Rico was facing a recession ("Puerto Rico Government Takes Statehood...). During Trump’s visit the island’s true damage assessment should have been around $90 Billion dollars' worth of damage. (In The Aftermath Of Hurricane...)

The economic state of Puerto Rico influences a major part of its decision to become part of the United States as a former state. With people suffering, some may want aid from the mainland though some are done with empty promises. However it is important to note that population also is a major factor. Fewer than ¼ of Puerto Ricans participate in voting for statehood meanwhile division in the votes continue. This is also influenced by Americans because Americans in Congress have a vote as well. Though this also includes Americans and other people who reside in Puerto Rico (3.5 million as of 2015) and these non-binding referendums are being corrupted with non Puerto Rican votes. This is why the economy, population, and the choice for statehood are all interconnected. (Puerto Rico Votes For U.S....)
