1. Systems level review for areas of improvement. I take the time to step back and review workflow processes to look for ways improvements can take place. For example, prior to school closures, I suggested the use of MS One Drive or Google Forms to share information and increase collaboration among Nursing Itinerants that are geographically working at different school sites.
2. Meticulous eye for details. In contrast of an overview of systems perspective, I also can focus on the smaller details that often make a difference in the quality and delivery of care. This is demonstrated in my documentation and follow up on "loose ends".
I would venture to say that my background & training in Design strengthens both #1 & #2 skills.
3. Receptive to take in constructive criticism. This is r/t #1 mindset. Always looking to improve & welcome feedback as I am a constant learner. I ask for my supervisors' and colleagues' feedback on my decisions and thought processes. This is so important to grow as an individual & growth in my profession.
4. Communication Loop. I am mindful to circle back/close the loop of communication so that parties are informed and resolutions are communicated. This helps build trust and good rapport.
5. Charged with the Educator's role. I try to take every contact as an opportunity to deliver education and health promotion and check skills for when teaching is needed. For example, when providing care services for students, I often explain the "why's" or "how's" to benefit the student's understanding of illness prevention. Student teach-back demos of how to use their medication (especially with self-administration orders) so that they know how to care for oneself.

1) Communication skills
Communicating effectively between different team members is important, because it will impact the care the student receives. Having good communication skills is also important when working with a student to ensure there is a clear understanding.
2) Time management skills
Being able to balance multiple things and doing it correctly is an important skill to have. The nursing office can get hectic and the school nurse has to be ready to deal with multiple things at once.
3) Serving as a resource (Leadership)
Educating the students, parents, school staff, and community on health related matters. If I'm asked about something I'm not an expert on, I do my research and report back.
4) Active listening
It builds the nurse-student relationship when there is an understanding.
5) Team player
It's important to work together as a team with other disciplines to promote health and education in the school setting.

1) Flexibility - Learning how to be organized and have an outline of how the day will be, but once fires start happening, the need to set lower-priority tasks aside to put the fires out! Constant re-prioritization, nursing judgement, and critical thinking skills are involved. Also, working with preschool age (3 -5 years) all the way up to teens means knowledge of their developmental levels, and communicating with them in a way that they can easily understand so they are not scared.
2) Teaching - Constantly teaching a whole variety of audiences, from school staff (principals, teachers, administrators, health clerks, paraprofessionals, etc.) to parents to students (and each student's developmental level).
3) Listening & Communication Skills - Assessment is always the first step! Gathering all the information I need by listening and asking questions. Getting as full of a picture as I can get before jumping into any decisions or resolution. Many times, words comes out, but there are so many other thoughts and feelings that are the undercurrent to what the person is trying to say.
4) Coordination and Organization/Time Management - Just trying to plan one event can mean a list of a dozen tasks to make that one event happen! Trying to stay organized with Google Calendar and electronic notes on my phone. Learning how to use my time to maximum efficiency when there are 20 things to do, but only 2 hours allotted!
5) Writing Skills - Learning how to bust out an Individual Health Plan while still being clear, concise, and thorough. The complexities and acuity of our medically-fragile population is increasing, with more students needing special care while at school.

1. Availability: In between IEP and 504 meetings, I am usually either on the phone with a health tech or at a site trying to assess a situation and come up with a plan of action.
2. Communication: This is key to ensuring the safety of the students. I have to be proficient at communicating with students, parents, and staff to ensure that the needs of the students are met, and that the staff I train are comfortable with the tasks that need to be completed.
3. Research: There are really very little health protocols and procedures in my district. We base our practice on evidence practice from NASN, AAP, etc. There is rarely a day that goes by that I am not consulting one of these organizations.
4. Flexibility: As with any nursing position, a school nurse must be flexible. There are days when I start off with a schedule full of IEP meetings, and if health techs call off then I find myself school site hopping for caths, tube feedings, and diabetic management.
5. Educator: A very big portion of my job involves teaching. Teaching students about health promotion and managing illness, teaching parents about health promotion and illness in children/adolescents, and training staff on how to manage safely manage students with medical conditions (among other teaching topics).

1. Consistency - I consistently deliver on my assigned tasks at work. I get fixated when there is a problem that I know I can help find a solution for.
2. Responsibility - I take pride in my work and therefore, I feel personally responsible for creating processes and seeing their outcomes.
3. Empathy - I hear the stories of my students and the parents that manage their daily needs and I am constantly thanking the parents for all they do (even if a little). I am a parent myself and I work with parents that sometimes ask outrageous things. However, I know that I would also advocate for my own daughter this way. I try to empathize and think about where their heart is.
4. Prioritization - I work for 7 sites and they all have a range of needs. I keep so many to-do lists and I range them from high to low and knock them out as I can.
5. Positivity - With so many sites and requests I have to remind myself that I am only one person. I sometimes need to remind my coworkers of this too, especially right now. We have to have boundaries, be selective with our time, and also do self-care or we will burn out.

-1. I am cool headed. You could measure this by asking parents in contentious meetings if I've ever raised a voice, talked out of turn or engaged in any unprofessional talk. I have had two parents yell at me in meetings. One for an IEP and one for a med error my LVN made and I was able to maintain my calm and composure by taking a pause and breathing.
2. I am always willing to grow and try new things. I started in Elementary schools and volunteered to take on middle school and high school, when that makes some school nurses nervous. I took on a role of mentoring new nurses in our district. I started a committee/campaign to get more awareness district-wide for our nurses using tools like social media.
3. I am a health educator, which I excelled at in maternal/newborn and brought to school nursing. I have trained 2 LVNs to do 24 hour care for two diabetic students headed to 6th grade camp last year. I had a 9th grader who did not know how to use his own Epi Pen for his severe nut allergy who I trained.
4. I am organized, which leads to good time management. I have a schedule in my head I try to follow daily. In this line of work, the schedule typically goes off the rails but I don't stress about that because I have a plan in my head of how to get back on track. This is evidenced by the fact I've never been late on an IEP when I was given the correct amount of time to complete my health assessment. My Supervisor has asked me to do tasks knowing I will complete them in a timely manner. I answer all my email within 24 hours.
5. I am not afraid to be a public speaker. I have trained teachers and aids of our Head Start program (nearly 50 people), I have spoken to the Board for Nurse recognition day, I regularly am a speaker for the Special Ed dept in secondary on health/medical jobs and how to get into the health field. Public speaking can be scary to some people but I typically feel very comfortable with it.
