My last name is Mulligan, which is Irish. My family is big on my Irish culture and sports! I am from a small beach town in Orange County, California called San Clemente. I have a mom, dad and one younger brother. My dad's side of the family has lived in this town since he was in his early teens. Majority of his side of the family live and work in our town. My mom's side is very close by. As a family we are very close and enjoyed going to the beach, sporting events and playing with our dog George.

I grew up in a family full of teachers who all lived in the same town and taught at my high school and neighboring high schools. I understood I was pretty lucky to live in such a beautiful place and be in a fortunate financial situation. I really resonated with what Vargra-Dobai explained in the context section of Remixing Selfies: Arts-based Explorations

Funds of Knowledge, Meaning-Making, and Intercultural Learning in Literacy: "For those who come from communities with little racial or cultural diversity, the highly diverse schools represent a challenge, and some of these pre-service teachers frequently experience discomfort and uncertainty in their interactions, especially in the face of linguistic diversity"(Varga-Dobai, 2018). This I found very true for my own journey because I have gotten a chance to work in some highly diverse schools and I did feel very uncertain with how to help them because I had never been exposed to it and had to learn on the fly what linguistic diversity supports can I give to these students.

My passion for teaching history is deeply rooted in my fascination with American history, particularly the 1960s and 1970s. I am especially knowledgeable about this era due to my extensive engagement with documentaries, novels, and period pieces that explore the transformative events of that time. This period intrigues me because of its profound impact on contemporary society, from the civil rights movements to the cultural shifts that continue to shape our world today. The patterns and legacies of the human rights era resonate strongly with me, making it a compelling and significant subject to study and teach.

One of my key teaching strengths lies in my ability to forge strong connections with students and build rapport, which enhances their engagement and enthusiasm for learning. I am also very positive in class and tend to overlook negatives and adapt very quickly when unexpected changes need to occur. I excel at designing activities that are both enjoyable and meaningful, and I regularly discuss with students what they find most engaging and useful. However, a challenge I face is my tendency to pack too much information into short periods, which can overwhelm students and make it difficult for them to absorb all the material. I am working on balancing the content and pacing to ensure that students can fully grasp and retain what they learn without feeling rushed.

Disciplinary literacy refers to the specific reading, writing, and thinking skills and strategies needed to understand and engage with texts and tasks within a particular subject area or discipline. Unlike general literacy, which focuses on basic reading and writing skills, disciplinary literacy involves using specialized knowledge and approaches relevant to fields like science, history, or mathematics to interpret and communicate information effectively within that field (International Literacy Association [ILA), n.d., pp. 2-5).

Philosophy on Disciplinary Literacy in the classroom

Disciplinary literacy is crucial when assessing future students' readiness to learn content because it ensures they have the specific skills and strategies needed for success in different subject areas (International Literacy Association [ILA], n.d., pp. 2-5). For example, a student’s ability to analyze scientific texts involves understanding scientific terminology and data interpretation, while historical literacy requires evaluating primary sources and understanding historical context. By considering disciplinary literacy, educators can identify whether students are equipped with the necessary background knowledge and analytical skills for each subject, allowing for targeted instruction that supports their ability to engage deeply with content and apply their learning effectively (Moje, 2007, pp. 32-37).

All content teachers should be concerned with literacy because it’s the foundational literacy skills that students need in order to do most things in a disciplinary class, especially as the move along to more advanced classes (Brozo et al). If a student cannot read at their grade level and you are only giving them grade level material they will not only have no idea what they are reading but they have no sort of line of understanding of the topic within the classroom (The Bilingual Learners Story 2017). That is why it is crucial to have more than one source of material and not all reading or writing. There are other elements of literacy that students use to learn other than reading and writing such as forming arguments and setting up a research paper etc. But as a teacher it is important that you must teach how to do these literary elements as well as teach the material/subject they will use these strategies for it ot be successful (Transforming Learning by CBD 2018).

Disciplinary Literacy = Equity

Disciplinary literacy is very similar to equity because it ensures that all students have access to the specific skills and knowledge required to succeed in various subject areas, regardless of their background. By focusing on disciplinary literacy, educators can provide tailored instruction that addresses diverse learning needs and backgrounds, helping to level the playing field. This approach supports equitable access to academic content by equipping students with the tools needed to engage with and excel in different disciplines, thus reducing achievement gaps and fostering a more inclusive learning environment.
