Music notation and language being translated into its own visual code. Spontaneous looking outcomes that are actually originating from a much more complex system of creating a visual language, although organically. This process and set of ideas heavily inspired the way I wanted to construct my manifesto, and how I can find other ways of carrying forward the similar nature of my own work. In the future, I want to branch out more my understanding of how I can create a visual map without being so restricted to a certain pre-existent grid or placement. This could potentially lead me to discover new materials and making processes. Although for now, the methods of constructing and coding I've been using have been fundamental, as they provide me with a sense of safety and comfort that's also essential to understand where the nature and motivation these pieces I've been making come from.

This was my second and final response to Cy Twombly's Untitled (Bracchus). I was not satisfied how it felt to be filling every space in between the dynamic, almost violent, brushstrokes of Twombly. It made me realise that perhaps that space wasn't empty at all, therefore I had no right to be considering it as such and 'filling' it as I first immediately wanted the moment I came to face this piece. It felt like I was betraying its purpose, declaring on something that wasn't mine. I feel better about this piece now, as I became able to set them as exact opposites - the original and my own - and accept that the shock was only to come naturally. I also grew to appreciate the differences in scale, colour and nature of each mark making process. One is impulsive, reflecting of its theme and exploration, the other is calculated, pensive, accurate, tedious (?)

This reponse came from my first attempt at drawing the 'negative space' of Bracchus. I didn't like how it was turning out so smudged all of the charcoal. After giving it some time, I decided to paint the new spaces left from the smudging.
