This sin was punishably by death. If it wasn't Emmitt, it would be someone else's son/cousin/nephew. 

His Cousins: His cousin's could have explained the situation to their dad (Moses) and they could have gotten taken him out and away from the house for the night. 

Patrons of Bryant's store: They ate up the lies Carolyn served them. One who witnessed the situation could have provided further clarification that would have spared Emmitt's life.
