In Ancient Rome, when a person died their eyes would be closed and everyone there would shout the deceased’s name. A coin was then placed on their tongue so they could pay the Charon (boatman of the dead) to help carry their spirit into the underworld. It was believed that the spirit of the person would enter Elysium (heaven) or Tartarus (hell).

Cemeteries and cremations were located outside the walls of the cities to prevent disease. For burials the body was placed in a coffin called a sarcophagus. If the body was being cremated it could be placed on a funeral pyre or lowered into pit filled with wood. When the ashes cooled they were placed in an urn which was then put in a tomb

Were often large depending on the wealth of the person. Personal possessions, food and tools were buried with the person. Anniversary banquets were held to look after the ghost and prevent haunting. Liberations of wine were poured onto the ground.
