Family is very important to Bud and is a central theme of the story.  His mother died when he was six and he does not know where his father is. Struggle is another word I chose because Bud is dealing with the day to day struggle of being an orphan and because the story takes place during the Great Depression, which was a time period of great struggle for everyone. This is also why I chose poor because at this time everyone was poor.  

            Even though Bud faces struggle and hardship, he is a very brave young man. Through his travels, he takes on the hardships of abusive foster parents, sleeping outside, avoiding the police and jumping trains in search of his father. Bud has several items he keeps with him in his suitcase that provide with him with a sense of security. Some of these items give Bud physical security such a blanket and a bowie knife. Other items such as the flyer of the big band give him security because he thinks it will help him find his father. Bud also keeps rocks in a bag that remind him of his mother.  Hope is also a word I chose because it is what keeps Bud going, even though he faces such adversity.  Hope is also why the title of the book is Bud, not Buddy, because his mother believes he is like a bud of a beautiful flower about to bloom.

The story takes place in Michigan during the Great Depression. It was difficult for me to understand how people lived during this time period because I have never experienced going without basic necessities like food and shelter.  The characters are believable because of the way the author portrays them, but I do not know of anyone who is an orphan.  I know of several people who I would consider brave, but none of them have had a life as tough as Bud. I read the book, Hatchet by Gary Paulson, this book tells the story of a young boy who survives in the wilderness with nothing but a hatchet, a gift from his mother. This story was similar to that book because of the bravery shown by the young boy to survive in the wilderness on his own.

            I really enjoyed the humor in the book. Even though the book is about a difficult time for Bud and the people around him, the humor of the story and Bud make it very enjoyable to read. Bud’s many adventures while searching for his father are also a reason I like the book. I would definitely recommend this book to a friend.  I believe they would enjoy the funny part of the story where a bug crawled in his friend’s hair and they nicknamed him Bugs. I also think they would enjoy reading about the many adventures that Bud goes on searching for his father like the time that Bud and Lefty Lewis got pulled over by the cops.  I give this book a thumbs up.  It is a great story about the importance of family, overcoming your fears, and never giving up.
