Think About It: Characterization in Art Work by Carr, Sara A.

Revisit the poem titled "Helen of Troy" we read on October 14th and view the painting. Both the artwork and the poem seek to communicate aspects of Helen's character.

Which aspects of Helen's character are emphasized in the artwork? The poem?
Which aspects of Helen's character are absent in each?

In this artwork, the idea that Helen is very powerful is emphasized by showing how she is standing above the ruins of Troy. It also conveys the idea that the use of her power has resulted in lots of death and destruction. This could show that Helen is very self-centered. In this artwork, none of Helen's feelings about this destruction are conveyed, we aren't sure if she feels bad about it, and I get the sense that the artwork is trying to say that she doesn't due to the placement of Helen and her casual stance. In this artwork, her beauty is somewhat emphasized, but not as clear as in the poem. In both, we see that the power of beauty can become a deadly weapon of destruction.
