About 9 months later, Rosa Parks did the exact same thing, and refused to give up her seat. Sadly, He was born into slavery. Small is known for many amazing things, like how he escaped slavery, and then bought the house he was a slave in, but the most remarkable achievement that he had was how he navigated the Charleston Harbor, and made a plan on how to successfully steal the ship, and many other things. On May 13th, 1862, Smalls was able to steal the ship because the white crewmen abandoned their post.

He lived with his mother, Mamie Till, in Chicago. Emmett was planning to visit his uncle, Moses Wright who lived in Mississippi, but they weren't very sure if they wanted Emmett to go, because there was no protection in Mississippi. On August 28th, 1955, At Brian's Meat Market in Mississippi,  Emmett came to the store to buy a candy bar. When leaving, he whistled at 21 year old Carolyn Bryant. Moments later, Carolyn went to get a gun. Emmett and his cousins raced home, hoping that nothing would happen to them. Soon later, Emmett and his cousins woke up to angry voices...They ordered Emmett to stand up, put his clothes on, and remain quiet. While his parents were begging not to take Emmett, even offering money just so they will leave Emmett alone. 3 days after Emmett was brutally abducted, August 31st, a boy fishing in the river found Emmett's body under a 75 pound fan from a cotton gin. Emmett was badly tortured, he had bruises all over his body, gun shot wounds, and many other terrible things had happened to him.
