During the olden days, the coolies who worked in Singapore started to smoke opium. Opium smoking was an accepted social practice by both the rich and poor in 19th century China. The act of offering an opium pipe to a visitor was akin to serving tea. When the Chinese migrated, they brought with them the practice of opium smoking, although some research shows that the habit had been adopted in Singapore instead. With the establishment of Singapore as a free port, the opium tax-farming system was introduced as a mean to raise revenue. The Opium Regulation was then passed in 1830 to prevent the subtle but lethal aftereffects of opium smoking.

Amusement Parks

The amusement parks of previous generations were child's play compared to today’s standards, with usually a single, wooden-framed roller coaster, bumper cars, a Ferris wheel, tall, tall, bumpy slides and the obligatory cotton candy stands.

However, some of those rides were more thrilling, by virtue of being much more dangerous compared to today’s high-tech amusement park rides. There were no safety bars on roller coasters, or seat belts in bumper cars. People fell out of roller coasters, out of bumper cars, and other rides on a regular basis. Splinters were inevitable on the big slides, all made of wood, also the material of which most of the rides were made of, and fires were not uncommon.
Movie Theatres
Like today, there were movie theatres where people could watch a film and hang out with friends.

Chinese coolies were forced to leave due to poverty in China to seek a better life in Singapore. There were three peak periods of Chinese coolie emigration to Singapore: 1823 to 1891, after Singapore became a free port; 1910 to 1911, before World War 1, and 1926 to 1927, after the war. The influx of immigrants decreased after 1927 due to the Great Depression and continued to decrease until World War II occurred, where coolie trade never peaked again.
Job scope
Coolies were employed in mines, ports, plantations, construction sites and as rickshaw pullers. They did back-breaking tasks under the sun and for long hours, such as loading and unloading cargo as well as tin-ore mining. It was a common sight in early Singapore to see coolies carrying gunny sacks filled with tin near the Singapore River.

Games

Once the electronics field started to boom, the advances kept coming at an ever increasing pace, until we now find ourselves with the very latest and greatest toy becoming obsolete in a matter of months.
Amusement Parks

However, not everyone wanted to sit indoors all day and play electronic games, and the family stories of the good times had at the old amusement parks began to provide a renaissance of the concept. Since the old parks were gone, entirely new ones had to be built, and built they were, with every possible kind of thrill and make-believe-reality ride and experience possible.
