The first Persian empire was the Achaemenid Empire. The empire was based in Western Asia and was founded by Cyrus the Great in 550 BC. The Persians started living in the southwest part of the Iranian Plateau. In 522-486 BC King Darius introduced tax but only in certain districts based on productivity and economic future. Darius also evolved the empire by placing the economy on the silver and gold exchange. The empire reached its peak when Xerxes the first, was in power from 486-465 BC. When Xerxes was in power most of northern and central ancient Greece was conquered. Surprisingly, A large number of the population were free individuals but did not have privileges of clan leaders and important bureaucrats. Those people consisted of artisans, craftsmen, merchants, and low-ranking civil servants. The Persian empire was one of the rare few to have a diverse culture.
